Optimized Battery Charging Not Available

Hey everyone.

I just got an almost-brand-new MacBook from eBay but I have noticed some odd issues with it. For some reason I can't find Optimized Battery Charging in the Battery Preference. I know that any Mac running macOS Big Sur and later support this feature, so why is it not working on mine?

I do know that a while back I had to replace a battery on a MacBook 2016 (previous generation) and after the replacement the option disappeared. This makes me believe that my Mac has a replacement battery, but according to System Profiler, it is by SMP; which is what most Macs use (or even DP). When I opened up the machine, it looked like an official Apple Battery, but I honestly am not sure how to identify that.

So, if this is something with the battery, how would I fix it? Or if it is something even Firmware or SMC related, how could I fix that?

I don’t think your systems battery offers the needed sensors to do it.

If you look at the battery I don’t see the BMC logic only a set of larger power contacts and what I believe the smaller is the thermal sensor.

@danj - Okay then. I wonder then why Apple claims it’s for macOS Big Sur and later… strange.

@jadonlyon - Well… the hardware needs to support the OS, Big Sur’s new features don’t all roll back, if we look at your systems EveryMac listing here 12” Retina MacBook(Mid-2017) and jump to the macOS listing we can see some features not supported

“Finally, this model is fully compatible with macOS Ventura (macOS 13) with the exception of the minor Live Captions in FaceTime, Emoji Dictation, and Reference Mode with Sidecar features. It does not support macOS Sonoma (macOS 14) or later.“

While the battery is not listed the battery doesn’t seem to have the full interface a MacBook Pro has.

@danj - What’s odd is that my 2013 MacBook Air supports this mode. That’s what made me think it’s something to do with the battery

por

@jadonlyon - The MacBook line is the smallest and cheapest model of Mac’s as such not all the hardware options are the same. Where the MacBook Air and Pro models have additional features.

You are correct, the battery it’s self appears to be the issue as the lack of the needed BMC logic and it’s interface into the system when compared with the Air’s & Pro’s batteries.

Besides the lack of the Optimized Battery Charging function this system is working correctly? And if you installed CoconutBattery it shows a workable battery. The other direction is to roll back to an older OS to see if it offers the option. I don’t think it does.

por

@danj - Yes. The battery is fine and it works great. I’ll upload a screenshot of CoconutBattery.
