[RPi4] Burnt out component, how to diagnose and replace

My Raspberry Pi 4 8GB v1.4 stopped drawing power recently.

I would plug it in to a battery bank, the red led would briefly flash, then turn off. The battery bank would report that no power was being drawn.

I eventually got it to accept power again, but the corner of the PCB near the USB 2.0 ports became very hot, and there was the telltale smell of components burning.

I think the large smd diode(?) near the USB 2.0 ports is to blame, but I'm not sure.

Can anybody help me find out what components are broken, and how to go about replacing them.

Solução escolhida

Thank you for your help.

It is a TVS diode, part number SMBJ5.0A-TR. It is D1 on the schematic.

When I removed it the pi booted fine. I will source a replacement.

Hi @cactus56109

Can't zoom in far enough to see it properly but what information is either on the diode itself or on the component directly underneath the diode in your image?

I assume you meant the smd package component and not the component to the right of it next to the USB2.0 ports which is where the arrow seems to point to.

Looking at the schematic for the motherboard it doesn't show the USB2.0 ports only the USB-C port, so was hoping to locate the diode by either knowing what it connects to or what it is near on the board.

Hi @jayeff

Thanks for replying. The component I think is the problem is marked KE 9L6CH.

I'm not positive it is a diode, but that seemed a good guess.

The six pin chip underneath it is marked 6J9wA.

I will add another photo with more detail.

There are two chips that dont have clear markings in the second picture.

The small three pin chip has the marking NA1GN and the six pin chip has the marking Z161.
