Whirlpool LSR8233EQ1 washer will not spin correctly

Hello, I had my transmission break and it was slipping and making a banging noise on the spin cycle. So I ordered a new transmission. After replacing it now the washer agitates fine but then when the motor spins the opposite direction to make it do the spin cycle it will not spin until I open the lid for a second and close it. Then it spins fine. As long as it doesn’t switch to agitation it will continue to spin fine. They sent a replacement transmission and it does the same. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Hi @chrishobbs61646,

Does the timer keep advancing when it reaches the spin mode (before you open the lid)?

Does the problem occur on all wash cycle types?

Yes. Everything else works fine. If I don’t open the lid it will pump the water out and continue with the next cycle. Yes it does it on all cycles.

Hi @chrishobbs61646

You said, "If I don’t open the lid it will pump the water out and continue with the next cycle", to me this indicates that there may be a problem with the wash cycle timer (supplier examples only)

Looking at the timer chart on p.26 of the tech sheet for your model, at the end of each cycle type the washer should stop and if I have understood you correctly you said that it drains the water and then moves onto the next cycle, thereby bypassing the spin function and also then stopping at the end of each cycle

Opening the lid, operates the lid switch and this causes the timer motor to stop operating as well as stopping some functions from continuing if they are in operation at the time e.g. filling, draining and spinning - see p.27.

Pausing the timer seems to stop it from slipping past where it should just move onto the next step.

Unfortunately, if I'm correct the timer will have to be replaced as there are no internal parts available for it. It comes as a complete assembly. Do not try to open it to see what's wrong as you'll have cams and contacts everywhere as it comprises 12 sets of contacts and their operating cams

Sorry. The timer works correctly. It does stop between cycles as it should. It is not skipping the spin cycle. I am convinced that both the new transmissions that I received do not work as the original. When it tries to start the spin cycle it will slightly turn the agitator in the opposite direction but will not fully engage until I open the lid which briefly stops the motor and that stoppage somehow triggers the transmission to engage then it will spin each time it should unless the washer does a agitation during the rinse. Then I have to open the lid again to make it spin the last time.

Let me start from the beginning. Originally everything worked as it should. The original problem was that when it started spinning the transmission started slipping then when it caught the gear it would make a banging noise. Every other aspect of the wash cycle worked flawlessly. So I ordered a transmission and this is when the problem started where it would not spin unless I open the lid. So there is nothing wrong with the timer. It is triggering the spin cycle. The motor turns the opposite direction from what it does during agitation. It turns the pump which drains the water but just can’t make the tub start spinning. If I open the lid to stop everything literally for just a second it triggers something and it starts to spin. Some cycles like delicate has no agitation during the rinse cycle so I once I open the lid once after the cleaning agitation cycle it will spin then run the rinse and spin again without me doing anything.

Just wondering if you received the correct replacement gearbox either time??

The part number is Whirlpool part # 3360629 which replaces part # 3360630 which presumably is no longer available..

Hopefully this is shown somewhere on the gearbox for you to check.

That’s what I ordered and what they claim they sent me.

You said "It is triggering the spin cycle. The motor turns the opposite direction from what it does during agitation. It turns the pump which drains the water but just can’t make the tub start spinning"

When it is turning after the lid has been opened and closed is it still turning the same way as when it is draining?

I can't get my head around that it reverses the direction of the motor as looking at the wiring diagram there's nothing that reverses the motor connections which would be needed to make the motor rotate the other way, unless the reverse direction is done in the transmission.

Do you still have the old transmission?

I realize that it was faulty but I'm wondering if the "spin" problem isn't there when it is installed
