Is it okay to use a magnetic scewdriver for my PC repair?

I tried to install 64 GB RAM that was advertised on Amazon for 8th generation processors. Corsair Vengeance SODIMM DDR4 2933 MHZ. BIOS shows 65536 system RAM passed. Bookworm (Puppy OS Linux) 65709784 KiB RAM. After closing it up. Had Battery problems. Light beside plug did not come on. Windows 10 showed the computer as plugged in not charging. ReInstalled BIOS, Battery Firmware. First battery not available. I now have Charging up to one hundred percent for external battery. Runs a long time on battery. Computer runs happily.

I suggest using a magnetized screwdriver to remove battery screws, as the tops of the screws are never barely above the top of the close by battery. Only a magnetized. I dropped screws onto MOBO, which I had tweezers to pick out. Only a magnetized screwdriver.

Which is why I wrote this. Is using a magnetized screwdriver dangerous to the components?

Since the amount of RAM displayed is incorrect, I plan on putting the original 16 GB back in. (??)

Just querying if you disconnected the internal battery before you dropped the battery screws onto the mobo?

I followed the guide. I turned off the internal battery in EFI/BIOS. I removed the screws. Dropping one on the side of the battery towards the inside of computer. Plucked it out with tweezers. I had black tape on the battery to mobo connector to seal it on. I removed black tape. Pulled the connector free.

I doubt if I have physical damage to computer. RAM specifications are not correct. Confused BIOS Firmware. Battery now says over one hundred percent charged. so both batteries are likely contributing. Just the Display does not nicely display the two batteries separately.

bought Corsair memory that was for Intel 8th Generation from Amazon for a T-480. Mine is an, Eighth generation Core I5. --"DDR4 2933MHz CL19 Unbuffered for 8th Generation or Newer Intel Core™ i7, and AMD Ryzen 4000 Series Notebooks "

This laptop was working well with 16 GB. I put this RAM in. I have some issues with Internal battery not being available, and strangely. Instead of 64 GB of RAM it shows, 65709784 kib. divided between the two sticks.

The computer boots and works. I guess I chose the wrong RAM. The Amazon return date on this is long gone. I ran Thinkpad own internal memory short RAM test, two hours. Passed. Ran x86 memory test for better than three hours. Finished over ninety percent. Passed.

I will have to remove these two sticks and put 16 GB back.

Anyone know if this situation, 65 GB RAM showing, is really all right?

I have used computer for a number of hours with new install of Ubuntu. Initial appearance is it works fine.

@purple3891 officially your Thinkpad only supports 32GB of RAM. Before doing anything else, remove your new memory and reinsert the one that was working, then re-evaluate. It is definitely okay to use a magnetic screwdriver. It is possible that this is related to a BIOS issue. Make sure it is up-to-date

Hi @purple3891, Thanks for your question! It is safe to use a magnetic screwdriver for your laptop repair. Our drivers at iFixit have a magnetic bit holder that transmits magnetism through the screwdriver bit, helping you handle all those tiny screws. In general, a magnetic screwdriver can't damage a modern PC because the magnetic field is too weak.

Yes, It is bad with magnets and computers, but depending on the strength of the magnet you might be fine, but may I ask if you were using a ESD wristband with this, as static buildup may have damaged the sensitive components.

This is largely untrue nowadays with solid state storage. The main reason that you shouldn’t use magnets on PCs is because you had a risk of wiping the hard drive. But even most hard drives from the last 15 years or so wouldn’t be affected by a magnetized driver even if it is directly on the drive.

Sorry, I just know that a strong magnet on a Chromebook makes it unusable. Were you by chance using a ESD wristband/mat?

@jfix8745 Good question. No, I did not use a wrist band.. I am working on a wooden table. Sitting continuously in a wooden chair. In retrospect, I should have, but it seemed unnecessary. Good technique always should be first.

Yes, personally, I feel what happened was your components got static damage, But how does it react with putting the original 16 GB back in?
