Samsung Microwave is off, but clock will flash if door is slammed

I have a Samsung Over Range Microwave model ME20H705MSS, which currently is seemly dead. It won't turn on, none of the buttons are responsive and the clock display is off. I know it's not its power source as the outlet is still fully functional for other devices. The thing is though, if I slam the microwave door shut the clock flashes for a half second before going blank again. My guess is that the microwave sensors (whichever form they take) are not detecting a closed door except in a quick moment when the door shuts hard. At this point I'm reluctant to start taking it apart based solely on YouTube tutorials and the like as they don't really seem to capture the same issue I've described. That being said though I'll absolutely take it apart if advised here.

Not an expert on microwave oven repairs but leery of the hazards of attempting to diagnose and troubleshoot any with covers removed. I would heed all warnings from experienced diyers and pros in regards to electrical and microwave hazards when probing live circuits (if necessary). At the least, are you familiar with using a multimeter to measure switch continuity like the closed door switch, without power? Your eyes can examine for damaged wiring, broken solder joints, and any other unusual defects like burn marks or discolored wiring. Unless absolutely necessary, make all continuity tests with power cord disconnected. Be wary of youtube videos from inexperienced people.

Hi @dg179,

As long as the power is connected, the clock should be on regardless of whether the door is open or closed.

Seems as though the vibration throughout the oven, created by slamming the door, is causing a faulty connection e.g. loose or dry joint wire somewhere, to reconnect and then to disconnect again.

Unfortunately, I can't find a service manual which would have the schematic for the oven showing the wiring layout and connections.

Working inside microwave ovens is not for beginners. The HV capacitor in the oven can store >6000V DC for months even if the power to the oven has been disconnected for this length of time. This amount of voltage can seriously injure you.

After disconnecting the power to the oven, you need to correctly discharge the HV capacitor as soon as it can be accessed after removing the cover from the oven and before commencing any further work inside the oven.

Once that it done then you can start tracing the wires from the AC input at the oven, through to the control board to see if you can see any problems. Having an Ohmmeter would be a advantage

I can't be sure what I had done that fixed the issue, but I took out the control panel, then I removed the door switches and checked that they were all functional with a multimeter. They all work, I put everything back in, and now the microwave is working again. The clock still turns off when I open the door though

Perhaps it is just the clock time display.

Does it show the cooking time counting down?

Whatever it is if it still counts down correctly and stops when it should then it seems to be on the control board

Note:

Do you open the door when the oven is still working to stop it, rather than using the control buttons?

If so that's a sure way to shorten the life of the door interlock switches. Opening the door to stop the oven causes the door switch contacts to "spark" and by always doing this it will eventually weld the contacts together.

Use the control buttons to pause or stop the oven before opening the door.
