Iceing in on the bottom of the freezer

The drain tube has been thawed several times but keeps freezing on my Kenmore 1065662500 . Can't find an answer on how to stop it from freezing. It is not clogged with anything else

Sounds as though there may be a defrost problem, in that perhaps the defrost cycle is not lasting long enough to melt all the ice off the evaporator unit or maybe the "heating" part of the defrost cycle is being ended prematurely, again not allowing enough time to melt the ice and allow all the water to flow away. What happens then is that when the defrost cycle has ended the water that may have been beginning to flow down the tube starts to be refrozen again, blocking it.

Even though they both sound the same the possible causes for each can be different.

I cannot find a tech sheet for the model so as to know how to manually start a defrost cycle so you may have to just wait until it occurs and check what happens. Perhaps leave the panel in front of the evaporator unit off so that you can see if all the ice is being melted off the evaporator and that all the water is flowing down the drain tube and not pooling etc during a defrost cycle. There may be more ice build up than normal because the panel is not there though. Maybe wait until the end of the defrost cycle i.e. compressor/fan restarted, before opening the door to check what has occurred

Things to check:

The timer may be faulty not allowing sufficient time for the defrost cycle to be effective or maybe not starting the defrost cycle as often as it should, therefore more ice build up than anticipted

The defrost timer controls the defrost cycle in the refrigerator. As best as I can find out this is a 8 hour/21 minute timer

Note: this may be 8 hours compressor run time and not 8 straight hours, I'm not sure which it is.

Once every 8 hours (or 8 hours run time?) the compressor and the evaporator fan are both turned off for 21 minutes to allow the defrost cycle to occur. During this time the defrost heater is turned on to speed up the melting of the ice on the evaporator unit.

Note: Do not confuse the fact that when the compressor is turned off that it is the start of the defrost cycle. It could just be that the refrigerator has reached its set operating temperature and it doesn't need any more cooling for a short while. This is controlled by the temperature control in the refrigerator. Once the temp rises above the preset upper limit, the compressor and fan will be turned on again to drive the temps back down again. Usually it is never off for that long especially if there's a lot of normal usage occurring i.e. doors opened a lot of times, losing cool air out. It may happen in the middle of the night of course depending on what the ambient temp is.

The thermostat may be operating prematurely for some reason.

The defrost thermostat is used to protect the evaporator unit from overheating and possibly being damaged during the defrost cycle. It usually operates at 45°F and closes at 18°F.

If the temp near the evap unit rises above 45°F the thermostat operates and opens the defrost heater power supply circuit, turning off the heater. The defrost cycle can still be continuing but there's no longer any heat to melt any more ice, except natural defrosting. When the defrost cycle has ended, the compressor and evap fan are turned on and when the temp reaches 18°F the thermostat closes and readies the heater circuit, for the next defrost cycle.

If either part is faulty, search online using the part number only to find suppliers that suit you best. (the supplier linked above was only to show where the part is located and what the part number is.

Apologies for the long answer but sometimes it helps to know how things should work to find out what's wrong when they don't.

The drain tube from the freezer to the evaporator pan may be clogged. Remove all the ice from the bottom of the freezer. Some times putting a little bleach in through the drain hole at the rear of the freezer will fix if it is an algae problem. Some times you haveto remove the tube to clear it.
