Cartridge slot replacement - Burnt pad on the board

Hi everyone!

I recently came upon a broken DS Lite whose cart reader was removed, so I want to install a new one. Problem is, one of the pads seems to have been burnt off, as shown on the pictures below. Is there any way to bridge the corresponding pin on the reader to another location on the board ?

Thanks.

Hi,

It looks like that all the pads correspond to a via (through hole) above them. Once you clean up the solder joints with some solder wick and then alcohol, you will see that this broken pad probably got torn off that big green trace that has the writing "CL5" in it.

If I were you, I would scrape off some of that green solder mask on that wide trace to expose the copper, making sure not to damage the via and run a jumper wire or a jumper pad to that pin.

Hope it helps!

Update (02/26/2023)

You are absolutely right, looking at the board that you linked, that pad is not connecting to anything so you don't have to worry about it. It happens that some of the pad are 'No connects' which means it is easier for your repair as you can just leave it as it is.

Hi,

Thank you for your answer. I did some research and found this picture of the circuit :

The via you are talking about does not connect to the pad that is missing. In fact, that pad doesn't seem to connect to anything. That might seem like a dumb question, but what use could a dead end pad like this one have?

(Shoutout to KreativDax on the BitBuilt forums for their amazing work, here's a link to the pictures of all the layers of the DS Lite PCB for those who are interested : https://bitbuilt.net/forums/index.php?th... )

The area you're concerned about shouldn't really be a problem. What's the second area? Looks ripped up too.
