Hp notebook battery not detected after deep discharge

Hi, I have hp notebook laptop 15g-dr0008u.

I left it turned off for about 1 month and when i returned and tried to start, it didn't recognize the battery.

I also tried running UEFI component test as suggested in one of the other hp website pages but it was automatically cancelled after stating deep discharge as cause of it. It recommended me to charge for about 60 mins and then again run the test.

But I am not sure if and how I will be able to charge it even after turning off the pc. When running with plugged in, it always shows 0% plugged in but battery is not detected somehow any time and strangely if i remove power cord then laptop shuts down so it looks like it keeps bypassing the battery forever.

I also tried to do so called hard reboot after opening laptop back cover with screw driver and removing battery and every other things out from it and holding power button for about 20 seconds.

And after hard reset, when i tried to start again, i got cmos reset message but nothing was really changed after it automatically rebooted.

Btw My battery is already brand new and genuine only 1 month usage still I am stretching my head around for this weird thing. Please help....

shashank_bhatt1, Unfortunately, your battery will in all likelihood need replacing.

Lithium based batteries do NOT like being discharged below the minimum voltage threshold, and that’s exactly where they go when being left plugged in and not charged for a month.

It doesn’t matter if the battery was brand new or a year old, completely discharged is completely discharged.

Hi, thanks for answer.

but what if someone has built in battery but not using laptop for a month. I mean this may also be the case.

We can't tell that it is discharged so it is gone forever. By plugged in means that it was attached to laptop(not to the power cord) as it normally used to as in default case you don't remove non removable battery.

@shashank_bhatt1 Yes, you are right! This is the big downside of using Lithium based batteries. NiCd were susceptible to the same, but were easier to somewhat recover.

There is a way to do the same for Lithiums, but the damage potential is MANY times greater than with NiCd’s and NOT recommended unless you know exactly what you’re doing.

Hi,

When you charged it for 60 minutes was the laptop turned on as well or did you charge the battery with the laptop turned off?

Charging a low battery with the laptop turned on wouldn't have put too much of a charge into the battery as the charger would be running the laptop at the same time so most of the power would go to the laptop and not the battery.

Uninstall the battery drivers in Device Manager and then restart the laptop and let Windows reinstall them. This is just in case they were corrupted for some reason.

Press the Win key + x key (both together) and click on the Device Manager link

When in Device manager go to the Battery category, right click on the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery entry and click on Uninstall and follow the prompts, then restart the laptop in the normal manner.

Check if it starts to charge the battery

You can also create a battery report and check the status of the battery.

Compare the Design capacity value versus the Full Charge capacity value. For a good battery the values should nearly be the same. It may just be that the battery has failed. Leaving it uncharged for a month may have depleted it beyond recovery. It shouldn't have but these things can happen. It may depend on how much charge was in the battery when the laptop was turned off and left for 1 month uncharged

Hi, I tried charging it both the way still it is not recognizing it. Now as a last hope, I am trying reinstalling drivers as you suggested.

Tried everything but No luck with 0% not charging. Tried everything. Couldn't be more disappointed on Christmas. Sigh.

@shashank_bhatt1

The battery report shows the battery is connected and fully charged.

So if it doesn't show that it is charging when the charger is connected, it should show that it is fully charged.

If it doesn't run on the battery only then it may not be detecting the battery and is relying on old information. It still could be a failed battery
