My charger is loose in the ports on the left side

My problem is my charger is loose in the ports on the left side of my Lenovo Yoga so the laptop cannot be charged. I have had the same experience as some of the writers - the charging light comes on for a nano-second if I jiggle the cord just right, but then shuts down. Now the computer won't even come on because its totally out of juice. I also replaced my charger more than once thinking it was an issue with the charger. It is not. Geek Squad tells me I'd have to sent the laptop in for technicians to replace the charging ports, and they might have to replace the entire mother board. This cannot be a battery issue, can it? Thanks. (Incidentally, the same thing is happening to my son's ThinkPad. We are not happy. These machines are expensive. My Yoga is only 1.5 years old.

Hi,

Please confirm the full model number of the laptop? Just asking as the model you selected is a lot older than 1.5 years

It doesn't sound like a battery issue as jiggling the power cord seems to be the clue.

Hi Cynthia,

I've outlined what you need to do to replace the charging port yourself down below in my answer, but I wanted to suggest that if you would like to see if your son's ThinkPad can be similarly fixed, you should post another question under the device page for his laptop and we'll see if we can't get that one fixed up too.

Hi Cynthia,

I've run into that same situation with my grandchildren's chromebooks where the charging port has been damaged by rough handling. My repairs were slightly difficult in that I had to locate replacement components, unsolder the old jacks and solder the new ones in.

Assuming you are working on a Yoga 710, you're actually in luck with regard to the charging port. Rather than being mounted on the motherboard, it's attached to the motherboard with a cable, and even better, you can buy that cable right here on iFixit!

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 710-14 DC-IN Cable

Assuming you can work a screwdriver, this is actually an easy repair. You just have to take off the bottom case and the cable is right there out in the open for you to get to. Here's the first step.

Lenovo Yoga 710-14IKB Back Cover Replacement - iFixit Repair Guide

Once you have it open, you'll be able to see the cable. I've marked the power jack with a red rectangle and the plug where it connects to the motherboard with an orange one.

You should be able to remove the old cable just by removing the single screw holding down the power jack (circled in red).

Then just unplug it from the motherboard and you should be all set.

Follow the instructions in reverse to reassemble your laptop and enjoy your fixed machine!

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

P.S., I actually ran across the official Lenovo Hardware Maintenance Manual for your laptop, and it does have instructions for replacing the power jack (or DC Input Cable as they call it). However, it seems to make the process much more difficult than it should be. You can look it over (the relevant section starts on Page 50) and make your own decision, but personally I think what I've outlined here will do the job for you.
