A lawn mower is a machine utilizing one or more revolving blades to cut a grass surface to an even height. The height of the cut grass may be fixed by the design of the mower, but generally is adjustable by the operator, typically by a single master lever, or by a lever or nut and bolt on each of the machine's wheels.

HR214 SX 1985 No change in the idling speed from HI to LO position.

Hi

I had to change the carburetor because the mower would only work on choke and would die on HI or LO positions. I didn't change anything else. When I pull the lever out of choke down to the Hi position the choke plate opens fully (as per the swivel on the carb) the rpm is pretty much the same but when I put it on the LO position there is no change in engine speed. The motor is GVX120 4.4HP 1 cylinder.

The governor arm is free to move but doesn't not move the idle plate back and forth while idling. There are no restrictions either on the idle arm where the 2 governor rods attach on the carb.

Any Idea?

Thanks

Hi @jazzier

Here's the service manual that may help.

On p.17 it shows how to adjust the idle and the governor.

Hopefully this is of some help.

Hi

Yes I know about the governor arm although many say not to play with it should I adjust the pilot and idle screw on the carb first while on the LO idle? My cable is at high tension when on choke and when I slide the lever on HI the tension is gone and on LO the tension is the same (more like no tension at all on both positions. It was changing the idle speed before I changed the carb and the governor arm and linkage have not been changed or played with. Do I understand correctly that when there is more slack on the LO position vs the HI the governor arm should be more mobile?

Thanks

@jazzier

It's a different carburetor so was the idle adj. on it preset?

Try adjusting it as per the guide

Comments of people who bought it said it was. Said they had no need to adjust the idle and pilot screw. It is my next step to see if it did need it but was waiting to receive my Tachometer Runleader Rl-hm058A. I received it but it was raining. I read the instructions and it says that the single wire should be wrapped around the spark plug wire for a 2 stroke (mine is a 4 stroke) and to wrap it around head of coil for a 4 stroke with a drawing I don't recognize and if they mean ignition coil then mine is inside the motor cover as you probably know and doesn't make sense to me since I saw similar tachometers on videos on obviously 4 stroke lawnmowers and it's wrapped on the spark plug wire. Do you know what they mean? I wrote to them but haven't heard back.

@jazzier

Sorry I only know a bit about 2 strokes (enough to get by) and usually adj. by ear till it sounds right. Not high tech with a tacho ;-)
