Pokémon Blue Game Problem

I just got an authentic copy of Pokemon Blue from eBay that I'm wanting to fix. The issue is that there is a huge black square where the characters are set to appear. How can I fix this?

Also, this is the first game boy cartridge that I'm actually going to attempt fixing, so I would like some pointers too if that's alright with you guys.

Update (08/07/2022)

I know that the game will definitely need a new battery, but now the game won’t get to the title menu whenever I put a cartridge in.

@hellomacos here is my multimeter. What setting do I need to set it on?

Did you post a pic after soldering. Looks like you tried but can’t see anything.

I fixed the bridging in the pins, but the game won’t still boot up. At least it can be read

Hi

I believe this issue is caused by corrosion on the PCB or loose pins

You may need to repair some traces by soldering them back with jumper wires but it will probably just need some isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds to clean it up

As for loose pins you will need some fresh solder and flux for them, it’s not to hard you just need to solder them down carefully

Here’s a video on fixing them up!

Hopefully this helps

If you need any help just ask

Thanks:-)

Edit: if you clean the spots I have high in red with isopropyl alcohol it may resolves your issue

If not let me know and we can continue diognostics:-)

@ace_boy2786

It usually is different across different game cards

Best thing to to is take it apart and see what’s happening :-)

Look at the chip on the bottom left of your pic. Left side has corrosion on quite a few pins. Clean it off with some ipa and re solder every connection on the board.

Hey there! Congrats on getting your hands on an authentic copy of Pokémon Blue. Regarding the black square issue, it could be related to a display problem or a cartridge connection. I suggest checking out some online forums or YouTube tutorials for troubleshooting steps specific to your situation. As for the battery replacement, that's a good call, and it's great that you're taking on the task of fixing your own game. Remember, there's a vast community of gamers out there who are always willing to share their knowledge and help each other out. By the way, speaking of gaming, have you ever tried blackout bingo? It's a fun and exciting game that adds a new twist to the traditional bingo experience. Just make sure to enjoy it responsibly and have a blast! Good luck with your Pokémon Blue fix!

It's a solder issue. Reflow every leg on the chips and it will work again.
