Laptop keyboard pressing random keys even on bios

Hey guys I have a Lenovo Ideapad 320. I think I may have busted the keyboard when I was replacing the hard drive with an SSD.

Had issues in the past where some keys would random stop working but would work fine in a while. Also once in a while some keys would press on itself and I had to also press random keys till i hit the one that is causing the issue.

A couple of days ago it got worst. The random pressing would continue and persist that I am unable to get work done.

Also I notice that when I press a key I would randomly press again later.

Tried disabling the physical keyboard but it did not work. I had use Sharpkeys to map that specific keys to do nothing.

It works but not ideal as I cant use some of my keyboard shortcuts and had to remap “p” to another key.

Also when I am booting and its on the bios, it triggers edit boot options . With the “p” key continuously pressing. I had to press backspace to stop it.

Anything I can do to fix this? Do I have to replace the keyboard?

I am thinking of disabling the laptop keyboard and used an external one but I havent been successful doing that. Windows keeps reinstalling the driver

It happens with my Lenovo T540p very frequently. I have replaced the driver and even disabled the keyboard, and now using an external one, but the issue still occurs. As said, it's random and difficult to reproduce but not in-frequent.

Does the same thing happen in the BIOS or in Safe Mode?

If yes then it is a hardware problem and so replace keyboard.

If no then I would suspect a corrupted driver. Go to Device manger (look in Control Panel) and fully detete the keyboard drivers.

I think its a hardware problem now. I tried it on safe mode and problem persists.

Here's the hardware maintenance manual for the laptop.

Go to p.50 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the upper case assembly. The keyboard is part of the assembly.

On p.66-68 Item #2 you will find the part numbers for all the "country specific" upper case assemblies that are compatible with the model.

When you have found the part number for your particular model variant, search online using the part number ONLY, to get results for suppliers that suit you best. Usually the part number can be found somewhere on the underside of the assembly if you wish to verify that you're ordering the correct one. Of course you have to dis-assemble the laptop to see it ;-)

I admit it's a bit confusing as each country seems to be listed 4 times with a different description i.e. xkw, kpg, kig and kib are shown in the part description. I don't know what the difference is but there must be as they have different part numbers even though the country is the same. Perhaps due to the manual covering 10 different models but I'm not sure about this.

Example - all USA keyboards but have different part numbers and description as outlined above.:

COVER, UPPERCASEASML80XKW IMR US KB 5CB0N82374

COVER, UPPERCASEASML80XKPG IMR US KB 5CB0N82229

COVER, UPPERCASEASML80XKIG IMR US KB 5CB0N82321

COVER, UPPERCASEASML80XKIB IMR US KB 5CB0N82279.

Alternatively put the laptop's serial number here to get information pertaining to your exact model. The serial number should be on the product info label on the bottom of the laptop

I do warranty service for them. I suspect as the keyboard service part is an entire assembly with the upper case of the laptop, the 4 different part numbers may either be different colors or cases with different features like different port openings.

If you didn't want to go to the extent of completely rebuilding your laptop into a new case, you could use that service manual to locate the keyboard ribbon cable, disconnect it, tape over the pins on the now loose ribbon cable and close it back up.

(If you do open it up looking for part numbers, from the example above you should see part number labels on most parts. (5CB...) It is possible to have multiple part numbers on a part. This upper case example, you may see a part number on the keyboard / keyboard bracket, then another on a touchpad if it's included, and yet another on the actual cover.

The comments above don’t include an option for images. Replying to my comment above about the option to physically unplug the keyboard, the service manual doesn’t indicate which cables are which. This highlighted cable is most likely the keyboard cable. It is possible that the touchpad is also connected through that same cable, but on the next page I see what looks to be the touchpad cable separate.
