Regarding weird charging issues on Mac Air

My mac air A1466 suddenly stopped charging. 1stly I suspected magsafe failure issue as there was no LED light. But then I opened up the back pannel of the lappy and disconnected the battery. On plugging in the Adapter, the system turned on by the direct connection. While in that running state, I connected the battery. To my surprise it started getting charged up. But again when I unplugged the adapter and plugged it back, the battery wouldnt charge.(Note: I had done the SMC reset and all)

Q1) How can the laptop work on direct connection with adapter? Brief on the in buit connection of the charging port and the motherboard.

Q2)Is it safe to do ‘hot swap' of battery?

Q3) What can be the possible cause of my battery not charging? Whats at fault?

Q4) Can I use DMM to check for continuity between pins of the charging port ? Which pin pair should pass the test and which pair shouldnt.

Q5) Pls Suggest any other methods to check for faults within using the multimeter? Do elaborate.

Well you do need a new battery, batteries die either from over use (cycles) or age which is your case here.

Here’s the needed part MacBook Air 13" (Late 2010-2017) Battery and here’s the guide to put it in Substituição da bateria do MacBook Air 13" de início de 2015

Just follow the guide and you’ll be fine!

To answer your direct questions:

Q1 - By-passing the MagSafe connection is not wise as you would need a good bench power supply and running your system in an open state on your desk defeats the systems cooling and besides the risk of something getting damaged.

Q2 - Why do you think you need to hot swap the battery? Shutting down your system properly won’t loose any of the data.

Besides I’ve never could figure out how to put on my runners over my dress shoes without first taking them off ;-}

Q3 - Your CoconutBattery output shows your MagSafe connection is not connected so I can’t tell you if your charger is working or working properly. Take a new snapshot with the MagSafe charger plugged in both at the power and system give it a few minutes for the CoconutBattery to respond. From what I see now it clearly has gotten some charge.

Q4 & 5 - Just like your AC wall outlet you wouldn’t use your DMM to check continuity, you would use it to check voltage. But we don’t need to do that! The MagSafe connector has a indicator which will show Amber (undercharge) Green (charged) or not lit when the connection is not made (dirt or bad charger)

DO NOT HOT SWAP
Just replace the battery for how old your model is 2013-2017 if it hasn’t had a battery replacement before its all it needs
