How to remove stuck (stripped/damaged patch/thread) screws?

Hi,

I was trying to replace the speakers of Macbook Pro A1398 following this guide Substituição dos alto-falantes do MacBook Pro 15" com tela Retina de meados de 2012 and I’m stuck at step 31.

I’m unable to remove one 2.6 mm T5 Torx screw (red) and one 5.8 mm T5 Torx screws (left orange one) due to their screw patch (thread) is damaged.

Is there any possible way to remove them using any tool? Any help would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Best regards,

Arif

Solução escolhida

You should be able to replace the right speaker as the screws holding it are exposed.

Are you using the proper sized screw driver, is yours worn? I would get a fresh tip/driver to see if that solves the problem. You also need to press down a bit Make sure you open the display so it is hanging over the edge of your work table and have something to pad the keyboard (thin towel or sheet of real chamois leather)

See if a scrap of chamois leather can help in getting a good bite with your driver. I also find a small drop of solvent around the screw head can sometime help and in other cases a soldering iron heating the screw can also help.

Hi Dan,

Thank you for the tips. I used a new T5 but there’s no grip. May I know where can I find a soldering iron to heat the screw?

Arif
