Reattaching connector for built-in webcam

MSI Modern 14. While upgrading the RAM, I managed to break this connector here, and now device manager can’t even find the webcam. Everything else seems to be working. Based on this (and having no luck finding a useful diagram), I’m assuming that’s what was connected here. My question is this: Can I reconnect this, whether it be with some conductive glue or soldering, or do I need to bring it to a shop? Haven’t done much with laptops beyond replacing RAM and SSDs before, FWIW, so no idea of the difficulty rating here.

Solução escolhida

so from the looks of it thats the right place.

to answer your question. you have a 95% chance of getting it fixed. its going to require solder work and using jump wire and solder mask to fix those messed up solder pads.

that requires running jumper wires from the last good area the trace is at. no offense but probably a bit past the skill level you currently have.

a shop like northridgefix on youtube would be able to repair this for you.

if you wanted to try and do this your self its going to require a bit of gear.

soldering iron with a micro tip and solder and flux

solder wick

jumper wire and probably solder mask

a razor blade and fine tipped tweezers. the list goes on lol

so what i would suggest is to look up the price for a repair shop to do this and then look up the price of a decent webcam if you even need one and go from there.

if you dont NEED the webcam….. there really is no harm in just not putting it back in. BUT IF YOU DO THIS, please make sure u cover the end of that connector with some electrical tape so if it does move around in there once reassembled it doesnt short anything else out in the area!

i hope this helped.

good luck!

Hi @smitty123,

Looking at a zoomed in image of the images that you posted I’m not sure if you also managed to pull the traces off the motherboard or whether they weren’t there at first, but I suspect that they were.

There are 10 shown in the 3rd image and counting from the top down, numbers 5 & 6 and 9 & 10 appear to be missing and it seems that they may be still on pins 5 & 6 of the cable as they look different to the rest.

I don’t know how may wires are required for the webcam but the user manual shows that there is a webcam LED and internal microphone located next to the webcam so maybe all 10 wires may be necessary for all three components. I assume that the webcam LED isn’t working given that the webcam can’t be found but have you checked if the microphone still works or not?

Maybe 6 wires are all that is required though . two for each i.e. webcam, webcam LED (also supplies power to the webcam maybe) and microphone

You could try smd soldering the cable back on but if the traces are gone then some things won’t work.

If the traces are gone then you may need the services of a reputable, professional laptop repair service and hope that they can manage to fix it.
