Machine quits when pushed forward, starts when pulled back again.

Sounds like an electrical problem, most likely the power cord is broken inside the insulation, try simply moving the cord back and forth right where it meets the vacuum and see if you experience the same issue, if you do you need to replace or repair the power cord.
