Why is my LCD backlight intermittently working?

Out of the blue, the screen on my MacBook seemed to just stop working. On closer inspection and after research, I've concluded that it is the LCD backlight that is misbehaving.

From time to time, however, the backlight does work. If it's not working I can press the Brightness(+) and Brightness(-) back and forth and eventually it will start working again.

I've read other people's questions on the matter and I'm not sure if they are exactly the same as my problem.

Could it be that something just needs tucked/plugged back in firmly?

All answers are greatly appreciated!

After fiddling about a bit, I decided to take my MacBook to the genius bar as it was still covered by Apple Care. They suggested that the whole screen be replaced.

I understand this doesn't provide a solution to my problem in terms of manual repair, but it brings this question to closure.

Sounds like there is a loose connection for the LCD inverter. If it goes out and you lightly tap on the frame and it comes back then a loose connection would be a safe bet. ( i didn't look but this looks like the older generation macbook with an LCD not an LED screen) You should be able to follow the guides section to find the inverter and test the connections. It is also possible the inverter is in the process of failing, however in my experience they usually just fail/stop working. Im sure someone with more experience might be able to offer more insight, including using a DMM to help figure out the connection problem if you have one...... if the connection is bad usually a new cable would be needed, i have not attempted to repair the cables that lead into and out of the inverter.
