Asus laptop has no display on boot

I recently bought a ASUS ROG STRIX GL753VD. Seller said that they were editing dome audio in FL Studios when it randomly shut down. Ever since then, he said he’d turn it on and it would just turn on the fan and HDD, but no screen change.

I’ve tried resetting the bios, reseating the ram (one stick), and reseating the hdd. What else could I try or is this where I’ll have to get the motherboard fixed or even replaced

Hi @returntomonke ,

Do you think that it is booting into Windows?

If so try connecting an external monitor to the laptop's HDMI port (or mini DP port) and check if it shows a display or not. Don't forget to press Fn + F8 to toggle the display between the laptop screen only, the external monitor only or both on together.

If not, can you get into BIOS on startup with a display? Press F2 on startup and check

Update (03/16/2021)

Hi @returntomonke

It seems as though it is not starting or at least not passing POST (Power On Self Test).

Not much happens until it passes POST (which doesn’t take long) so there may not be any lights except the Power light or perhaps sometimes a blinking caps lock or power light indicating a problem if it fails during POST (blink error code)

How did you reset the BIOS?

If only by disconnecting the battery and holding the Power button operated for 15 seconds then in this instance it may not have been enough to restore the BIOS to its default values.

Try a full power refresh by disconnecting the main battery and removing the motherboard so that you can remove the CMOS battery from the underside of the motherboard. Remember the orientation of the battery before removing so that you reinsert it the right way. Usually it is +ve on top

When you have the battery out, measure its voltage and if it is <2.6V DC, replace it. It looks like a CR2032 coin cell battery so it is commonly available most everywhere. Check the type number on the battery just in case it is another type. Checking the battery voltage allows enough time for the BIOS to fully reset as now there is no power at all on the motherboard.

If you haven’t got a DMM (digital mulitmeter) then allow a minute or so, before reinserting the CMOS battery to allow the BIOS to default back to its factory default settings, hopefully restoring any settings that were corrupt and preventing a normal start

Then reinsert the CMOS battery, reinstall the motherboard, reconnect the main battery, close up the laptop and try turning it on.

Here’s an image taken from a teardown video of the laptop, showing the location of the CMOS battery on the underside of the motherboard.

If it still fails after this then it is a motherboard problem

No display on a second monitor and I was pressing FN + F8.

Same for BIOS start up.

I never once saw the HDD light come up either time but it still would’ve given me some type of signal even the HDD wasn’t being found right? (screen wasn’t dim or anything either on any part of the panel, just complete blackness the whole way around).

Okay small update: I reseated the CMOS battery and some connectors (CMOS was being held by tape and so were the connectors) and now the rgb lighting on the keyboard is on and it seems to be acting like it wants to boot, but still nothing on the screen. I may have to try it again on an external monitor.

Edit: Okay so the CMOS battery holder is kinda messed up. Two of the pins are bent in an incorrect manner, so now I have a new question: Would this be what is preventing the whole laptop from possibly working?

Hi @returntomonke

Seems like the seller had more problems than they let on if the CMOS battery holder was messed up. It's not the easiest place to access and this wouldn't happen by itself.

It is the CMOS battery that supplies the power to the BIOS chip when the laptop is off so that the settings remain as selected and that any other non user defined settings also remain as set by the manufacturer. It is the BIOS that controls how a PC functions and also interacts with the OS

If the CMOS battery voltage is <2.6V DC or there is some other problem with it, then there is a "possibility" that the BIOS can become corrupted which may prevent a normal start.

By removing all power from the motherboard the BIOS defaults back to its preset factory state because there is no power to hold any settings in their current state, corrupted or otherwise. So if you have altered any BIOS settings to suit your particular operating requirements they will have to be set again after doing this

The CMOS battery is in your case a non rechargeable Lithium battery and normally there are no issues with it but I have found on some occasions that I've come across that when trying to solve a start problem that removing/replacing the CMOS battery worked and further that this kind of problem happened more often when the battery voltage was <2.6V DC so now I recommend that it be changed if this is the case.

The battery usually lasts for about 4-5 years before problems arise because of it and usually one of the first indications is an "incorrect date and time message" on startup but this may not happen in every case.

You are unlucky that the CMOS battery is on the underside of the motherboard as with some and especially on desktops it is on the top and easy to access.

@jayeff

I’ll go ahead and change it tommorow and look into the cmos battery holder as well and possibly have that replaced since it isn’t going to hold it and I dont trust electrical tape holding it.

@returntomonke

Is the holder still soldered to the motherboard and it is just tape holding the battery in the holder?

The laptop should work without a CMOS battery as long as the battery holder is not shorting out although there will be a date and time error message every time it starts.

If the battery holder is not soldered to the motherboard it is problematic that there is a good electrical connection through it from the motherboard to the CMOS battery
