I was replacing a battery on a 3rd gen touch and I was chatting away to my friend not concentrating and soldered the battery the wrong way round, I quickly spotted it and removed it and replaced it with a new one correctly soldered, and now she won't fire up. I have suspected the worse just looking for confirmation really...

I was lucky after screwing it all back together she fired up and all is ok :-)

There is a good chance that you've fried your logic board, but without being able to trace the power it's hard to say how far the damage could have spread.
