Just bought a new 2019 MacBook Air, and the camera looks like it is 480p or something, it is very grainy and horrible quality. This is a major difference to my 2015 one. Any ideas?

I think the issue isn’t really an issue. I think they’re the same, it’s just that the 2019 is worse in darker conditions and the quality is the same, just more noticeable on a better display.

Both systems have a 720p HD camera. The newer 2020 M1 system also has a 720p HD camera but unlike the 2019/20 intel models Apple added ML logic to the output which improves the image.

I have a MacBook Air Retina 13.3-inch (2020) - Core i3 - 8GB - SSD 256GB and the video quality is horrible...extremely grainy. Is this fixable or is it inherent to certain year's design?

Sorry if this question is lame ... but is there a protective film on the display? It might be covering the camera. Also, you say "new" 2019. New to you? Apple refurb?

@Michael Ayukawa Not lame at all, I am certainly dumb enough to miss that. No, no protective cover. I bought it from a friend who had bought 2 last year (for some reason) and never opened the 2nd one, so it's brand new
