Hi @scrapper7718 ,

USB ports are soldered onto the systemboard. They are not secured with an adhesive

They are held on by being soldered to the systemboard by their mounting lugs which take the strain and also partly by their connecting pins which are soldered to the systemboard tracks.

There are plenty of YouTube videos that show how to solder a USB port connector in a mobile phone

Right. Let me clarify I've already replaced the USB charging port assembly per the video and that went well. My question is what type of paste, i.e. thermal or dielectric because I am curious if it is actually criticality performing any other service beyond actually securing that card. Phone operates fine after I put it back together however the type of pace may come into play later down the road. It may be needed to complete a ground in the phone. Also the grey circle adhesive part did not come with the replacement port and I'm wondering is that to is used to complete a ground?

Hi @scrapper7718 ,

Are you sure that it is a conductive adhesive paste disc?

Looking at Step 14 in the ifixit ZTE Max XL USB charge port replacement guide it looks more like an insulator that is stuck down, to provide electrical separation between component layers in the phone when it is assembled

Normally one or more of the systemboard pads to which the USB connector mounting lugs are soldered are connected to the earth plain on the circuit board. This provides the earth shielding on the connector.

After doing more examination I totally agree with your summation of what that is:

"Looking at Step 14 in the ifixit ZTE Max XL USB charge port replacement guide it looks more like an insulator that is stuck down, to provide electrical separation between component layers in the phone when it is assembled"

I think I mistakenly assumed that it was an adhesive but separator sounds perfectly reasonable. Thank you so much and I appreciate all of your patience and input!

Hey guess what? A previously undisclosed backdoor that enables ZTE to Root this phone exists via a single password out there. So bad that US government now prevents our military and government personnel to use the ZTE phone and for a time bannedproduction in the Apparently ZTE was forwarding shared technology in the phone to countries on our terror watch list. Google ZTE backdoor. Mine works enough for me not to brick it. Where's the better place I can post this comment?
