How to go from olde OSXs to a APFS system like Mojave

I am asking for some guidance on how best go from an older OSX , for instance Maverick or Mountain Lion, which are often on my ebay purchased machines, to installing Mojave. I have a nice copy on Mojave on an external drive, but because its file system is APFS. It is tricky to get disc utility in an older OSX to reformat the drive in Recovery. The older OSXs did not even know about APFS. So I always have to install Sierra first, and then go to Mojave. Seem awkward...

I don't recommend pushing your system beyond the OS the system was designed to support. Review EveryMac for the systems limits.

While you can push some systems to Mojave or Catania using DosDude patchers. Your system needs at least 8 GB or more to be useful. Fun to play with but not very good for anything serious.

As far as the file systems APFS has issues on SATA based drives, which is why I don’t recommended it on older systems. Stick with Sierra as the highest macOS if the system can support it using HFS+.

Be aware Apple messed up the certificates on the last three OS’s. They forgot to update them If you've got an old macOS install image, it will probably stop working today. Here’s the patched OS’s

Jump to Step 4 for the direct links. Anything older will need to back date the systems date setting to a date thats within the OS’s release window.

I’m confused. You’re trying to install Mojave on older machines? I would create a Mojave USB installer (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372) and boot to that. I wouldn’t mess around with recovery mode at all.
