My tv won’t turn on

I have a 2018 Toshiba flatscreen with a model # 43LF621U19. It could turn on before I went to work and when I came back it wouldn’t even power up. No running noise from the fans and nothing from the power light. When I dismounted it from the wall there was a distinctive smell of burnt plastic but taking the shell off (23 screws later) I saw nothing melted or smoking on either boards. I checked continuity (the only thing I’m capable of) and there was the correct amount of voltage running into the main board, but couldn’t get readings from anything else. I then found what must have been burning, a small plastic spool with a thin copper wire wrapped around it, plastic melted where it had contacted the wire. Any thoughts or assistance? If I can I’d rather not have to buy a new television.

Same problem only no burning. I checked the power socket and still nothing. Took off the back plastic cover and yes 23 screws later, everything seemed fine, nothing burned. It's our second year with it. What can I do?

I figured out how to fix this today after reading all of the posts that said its "unfixable". The problem is due to Chromecast setup mode being stuck, if you have connected the tv to your wifi previously you will need to do the following

1. Using a phone or other google device, download and setup the "Home" app from google

2. The app should detect the tv on the same Wifi as your phone even with the tv being completely dark, (no screen, no red light)

3. Complete the tv's chromecast setup and skip through all of the other streaming bs, you don't need it for this

4. Once it has completed, the phone should indicate that the tv is on "stanby" or something to that nature. Essentially the black screen and no red light are due to chromecast having an invisible non-responsive "screen saver"

5. Hold down the power button on the side of the tv until you see the tv reboot, keep holding until it fully powers on and asks you to complete setup (language, time, tv channels, etc. )

6. At this point you should be good to go.

This worked. It was my chrome cast. My tv had all the problems you mentioned above, so I almost trashed the tv. Thank you so much!

I have a problem with the power card on my Toshiba TV model 42WL66E , no Spar part available because it's an old TV .

Was there a power outage or storm between the time that the TV was on before you went to work and when you got home?

If so there may have been a power surge that affected the components on the board(s).

Perhaps, if there was a storm etc, the TV may be covered by your home contents insurance policy. Worth a check.

If there was no storm or outage then how old is the TV. You say it is a 2018 model. Is it still covered by the manufacturer’s warranty period?

If so follow the directions in the manufacturer’s warranty statement (it is possibly in the TV’s user manual) about how to make a claim for a warranty repair or replacement.

If it is no longer covered by the warranty then as you have already found one problem with the TV (and there may be more, the one you found may be the only “visible” problem), without a schematic diagram (and Toshiba does not release them publicly) it will be difficult to find.

Since it is not showing any signs of power perhaps replacing the Power board may be the best option to try first and hope that it took the brunt of whatever happened and that it did not affect the rest of the TV. Was it left on when you left for work?

Here’s a link to a supplier of a power board for your model.

It is only shown to give you an idea of the cost of the board. There may be other suppliers that suit you better. Just search for 43LF621U19 Power board to get results.

Important: Check that the board number printed on the power board in your TV matches exactly what is shown in the link or from wherever you decide to buy the board.

Also if it was a storm or outage that knocked out the TV then perhaps connecting the repaired TV or a new TV (if you get one) to the power via a surge protector may be a prudent move in the future. Just a thought.

Thank you so much that looks like the same exact power board as well. Are they easy to change out? Is there any sort of prowess needed for this stuff?

Hi @bobertron12720 ,

Don't know your model TV but with most TVs the cables(s) connected to the board usually just pull straight out of the connector. Study the connection first just in case yours is different and has latches etc that need to be raised to remove the cable or cable plug etc. Always try to remove carefully and do not pull too hard and if the cable has a plug end and not just a wire end pull on the plug and not the cable.

The following are just some suggestions to make life easier:

Lay the TV face down flat on a blanket (double folded if possible) on a table to protect the screen when working on the back.

Take some pictures before you remove anything so that you know where to put it back in case you forget. Check if the cables have a stripe down one side so that you plug it back in the same way (see note about pictures)

Keep a jar handy to keep the screws in so that you don't lose them. Don't drop any into the TV - if you do, then find them as you don't want loose metal floating around in the back of a live TV

If there are different length screws mark them as to their position so that you replace them in the correct place.

Try not to touch the components on the power board or any other board either, so as to minimize any potential ESD problems. Try to hold the board by the edges if possible.

Take your time doing the repair and if you run into problems, STOP and think about it before proceeding further. This forum is full of questions by people who let frustration cause them to create more problems than what they originally had. Walk away if necessary and come back to it.

I'm sure that this won't happen though ;-)

Be aware that even though you have replaced the power board there still may be more problems further in the TV, so if it doesn't work OK more testing will have to be done

Did not work. after resetting my tv, I got to the Chromecast set up. while connecting to the wifi, it shut off again. I just ordered a new power cord from amazon to give that a try.
