Is this battery swollen?

I opened my MacBook Pro to swap the hard drive and noted the battery appears swollen. Is it safe to run like this?

This computer is already plagued by the GPU failure so if the battery is now bad also, it’s probably time to recycle it.

This is a very dangerous battery!

Take the system outside and remove the battery ASAP!

Use care and make sure you have a fire extinguisher handy just in case!

Well, $@$*. That’s what I was afraid of.

Is this thing worth selling? Remember the GPU is also bad, so I can only remote into it.

You know you can over-ride the dedicated GPU so you are only using the Intel graphics engine. At least you can make it useful.

I unplugged the computer and disconnected the battery, covering the plug with electrical tape to prevent reconnection or a short. Hopefully that renders it safe enough until I can get it to the Apple store. Interestingly, I couldn’t put the cover back on... removing it must have released some pressure and allowed the battery to swell even more. @danj

Bob - Apple won't replace the battery in this series as its classified as a vintage system - Vintage and obsolete products

Solução escolhida

Once the pressure of the bottom cover has been removed the battery may expand rapidly and become much more dangerous and difficult to remove, therefore DO IT NOW. Even if you do not have a tri-wing screw driver, many times the pressure has already broken the retainer tabs off. Sometimes you can use a small flat head driver to get them out or use a pair of dikes to just break or cut them. iFixit sells replacement batteries.

gfxCardStatus software will allow you to turn off the integrated graphics feature of your GPU and continue to use the computer. https://gfx.io

looks swollen

could you run it as is? probably be fine for a little while. but it’s just going to get worse and worse. good thing is macbook batteries aren’t usually terribly expensive, just try to find a high quality one or an oem one as bad/low quality batteries can cause a ton of issues.

Edit: looked at battery picture again after following comments. At first glance thought some of the bulge may have been the supports I’ve seen in some macbook batteries, but no, definitely bad. I wouldn’t recommend trying to use it further.

You could probably replace the logic board and battery much cheaper than the cost of a new macbook as well. Something to maybe look at.

This battery will burst soon! I wouldn't charge it or use it in this state.

There's a difference between a healthy high cycle battery vs. a bomb. This is a bomb.
