Is it possible to replace iMac 27" fan with the fans from the iMac Pro

If the fusion drive is replaced with an SSD, based on the architecture similarities, it looks like the iMac 27” could fit the dual fan system from the iMac Pro. Would this be possible? Has anyone tried it? Would it improve performance, especially on the i9 processor configuration?

Other than the looks from the outside the internals are very different between the iMac and the iMac Pro.

There is no means to physically fit either the fan’s or the SSD’s between the series.

Review these:

As you can see very different insides!

It will be really interesting to compare a breakdown on the new 2020 iMac 27". I'm especially curious to see if (a) the cooling system has been updated, (b) the logic board is same or updated, (c) CPU is still upgradable, and (d) graphics is soldiered or upgradable.

@Quinn Rusnell - OWC just released a vid of their teardown of the system: 2020 27-in iMac 5K Teardown Sadly, the cooling is the same as previous models.

I agree. The high end iMac configs need more cooling. I’m currently checking to see if the new iMac announced today has the iMac Pro fans as you suggest. There should be room with the Fusion Drive now gone.

Too bad. The high end iMac needs better cooling to run quiet.

@tbcuthbert - A different CPU series! Core Vs Xeon which requires much more cooling.

Intel has struggled to shrink its Node scale down, now five years late, they are just getting it out the door. The smaller the scale the cooler it runs! Here's a good listing CPU Benchmark Hierarchy 2020: Intel and AMD Processors Ranked focus on the TDP the smaller the number the cooler it runs. But! It can also mean it's not as powerful in some cases as the Node scaling may be larger than others with the same or better performance (independent of price).

I think you'll find the just released iMac's (likely the last iMac with Intel silicon) won't have much of a change in its cooling. Apple wouldn't have made that large an investment in a dying product series. We'll need to see what the famous iFixit teardown team discovers! When they get their hands on one.

The newest Intel 10 nm Ice Lake chips which just run much cooler! So they don't need the massive cooling the old 14 nm designed Xeon CPU's Apple is using in the iMac Pro.

Thanks for insight @danj.

Looking forward to the iFixit teardown and test results of high-end 2020 iMac .
