I came home and found that the turntable had been switched on and the stylus had been dragging on the rubber mat. I have no idea how long this had been running. Assuming the stylus would be damaged I have put two new stylus' and it is still sounding fuzzy. Could it have affected anything else?

It sounds like the excessive drag on the stylus has somehow distorted the transducer mechanism. You should be able to get a new pickup cartridge quite easily and fit it to the existing pickup head.
