Is it possible to upgrade the MacBook Pro 13" (Early 2015) as a whole

I love my Retina MacBook Pro (Early 2015), it is probably the last MacBook with best keyboard and all the ports. I want to use it as long as I can. However, it is kind of slowing down on performance. I would like to know if upgrading the logic board (with 16gb ram instead of current 8gb), a new battery and a possible UPGRADE of better quality retina display will help, or is it worth that? I plan to install a new logic board, along with better thermal paste, new fan, Intel 760p SSD (for power consumption reasons), a better display from newer MacBook Pro if compatible and battery. What are your thoughts on it?

Update: It seems that the capacity of battery has gone down to 95.7% (still good enough as per the numbers) however, the percentages go down significantly and even in Sleep mode, I’m losing so much battery power. I have reset the PRAM and SMC just now though.

While you can get a replacement logic board which has 16 GB of RAM they are getting hard to find!

I would clean the dust out using a soft paint brush and a can of can’ed air. Cleaning off the old thermal paste and applying a fresh coat also makes sense. Replacing the fan should only be needed if cleaning the dust build up didn’t help and the fan was making noise (bearing gone).

A cheaper upgrade would be getting a new SSD. You only have a few choices as these systems use a custom Apple SSD. I would look at getting either a 480 GB or1 TB version MacBook Pro and MacBook Air (Mid 2013 to Early 2015) Blade SSD Upgrade Bundle. FYI if power consumption is an issue you’ll want to get the original Apple SSD. Review this great guide: The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs and here’s the drives Samsung SSPOLARIS PCIe 3.0 x4. Just like the logic board issue above they can be hard to find.

As far is it worth it? You’ll need to price out how much you are willing to spend. As I said, upgrade your SSD with the OWC (cheaper and available) for sure, think long and hard if you really need the 16 GB board. Most people go for a bigger SSD to off set the lack of RAM given the costs.

Hi @danj , I have updated the post. I also found some logic boards on eBay (I know, I know) should I research there or wait for iFixit to update their inventory? I couldn't find logic boards with 16gb RAM here. I am planning to use this machine as my primary development machine so I wanted to use 16gb. As for the SSD, is OWC the official Apple one? I've watched some YT videos about Samsung 970 Evo but they say it affects battery a lot and suggested to use Intel 760p for its reliability. I'm confused :/

Battery looks OK!

As far as getting a board from eBay, use a credit card (or prepaid card) that protects you if the board is bad (or locked) and you can't return it.

No, you can't use the either the Intel 760p or Samsung 970 M.2 SSD's. They will not fit your system. Apple has their own physical interface as you can see in the Ultimate Guide to Apples Proprietary SSD's I posted in my answer.

There are only two 3rd party companies that offer direct drop in SSD's for your system OWC or Transcend. I strongly recommend you either stick with The custom Apple Samsung SSD's (as I posted in my answer) or go with the OWC SSD (also in my answer).

Hello- I Have the same question really. I have an early 2015 macbook pro and would like to to upgrade my ram to 16 or even higher if possible. Is what you’re saying is if I swap out my logic board with a 16 gig it would work?

Gerry - the 128GB is your SSD's size. What is your RAM size? You can use either logic board I pointed above with 16 GB of RAM. But you also need more storage! 128 is very lean! I bet you have your drive quite full and if you only have 8GB The system is fighting its self! You need to have 1/3 of your drive empty with a 128GB drive I would get a 1TB OWC Aura Pro X2 SSD OWC makes a nice one for your system. @danj , I am in the same situation as Gerry! I have no experience and little knowledge about anything beyond stock. I am looking to fix my computer performance and drive space (big issue). If I were to go with the 1TB SSD, would I also have to upgrade the RAM from 8 to 16?

@jjmurt - Its a question on what your issue is.

• Are you running heavy apps, large projects, gaming? Then I would upgrade the logic board to get the RAM.

∙ If you have lots of stuff and your drive has less than 1/3 free in a 128/256GB drive and 1/4 with a 512GB then you are running out of storage space!

Or, both!

Hello, I have the same MacBook Pro early 2015, 8GB RAM and i5 intel, 128GB drive. I upgraded a while ago with 1TB OWC Aura Pro X2 SSD that @danj mentioned and my MacBook is reborn. It's much faster, battery health seems to have magically improved from 'repair' status to 'normal'. Honestly, I personally feel like I do not need another upgrade at least for now. Depending on what you intend to do with it of course, but for me, this works perfectly (I'm an average user > studying (writing, reading), browsing, etc). Still love this Mac, and this upgrade (of approx. 200euros) really made a huge improvement.

If you can't find a new logic board, maybe send it to a particular workshop where soldering new components to it would be an option. Check out YT channels "Optimize Logic Repair", "Electronics Repair School" (UK), iBoff RCC or NorthridgeFix (Los Angeles) to see how technicians can repair logic boards (and just about anything) that are in really bad condition, or even soldering better chips/RAM. I'd do this if I needed a better processor for graphics. Or if a particular component is unavailable or too expensive to buy. Batteries remain a huge problem. I recently spent a fortune on one that I hope is not shady and lasts for at least a couple of years. I upgraded the SSD and added thermal paste. The machine is slightly better but still a 100% functional, which is the whole point of restoring.
