HP Power Button not working

Hello everyone,

I have an HP laptop (Model: 15-ac108nx) where as the titles says: the power button is not working.

What happened here was I had it running and had to forcefully shut it down. I tried using the power button to shut it down but I wasn't getting any response from the laptop. Hence, I removed the AC adapter to shut it down (which may have been a bad idea I guess).

When I booted it up once again it is not powering on anything. I did not hear the fan running, there were no lights going on and so on.

The laptop's battery is removal however I don't use it since the battery isn't working anymore so I only use the AC adapter to power up my laptop. There is a light indicator beside the AC port that actually lights up and that is the only light that is on my laptop.

The only troubleshooting method I did was the power reset method.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

Here’s a link to the service manual for your laptop.

Scroll to p.71 to view the pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the power button board. (the spare part number for the board is also on this page)

You may be able to test that the button is OK by using an Ohmmeter to check for electrical continuity through the button when it is operated, once you have disconnected it from the systemboard.

If the button is faulty, search online using the spare part number only to find suppliers of the part.

Hay there users I was having the problem just few hours back. Well the solution of this problem is unplug all the device which is connected with your laptop like your pendrive, mouse or anything else. After it let your laptop discharged property then charge it to 100 percentage then turn on your laptop.

Once the Board lights lit up hit F1 and the screen lit with a configuration update.

 Perform a hard reset

If a PC suddenly fails to boot properly, you should perform a hard reset as the first procedure.

  1. Disconnect all peripheral devices and remove all USB devices and media cards. You want to test the computer not the accessories!
  2. Disconnect the AC power adapter, remove the battery, and then press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds .( I held it for about 25 seconds)
  3. Reconnect the AC power adapter, Press the Power button, Look for glowing LEDs near caps lock and num lock keys, and Listen for sounds of a disk drive and fan turning.

Pulled battery, held down power button, reconnected power adapter and poof it worked. I'm a repair tech and tis makes no sense to me, maybe a power surge?

Removed battery, pressed the power button for 15-20 seconds, reconnected battery, reconnected power adapter: worked like a charm. Thank you

If you see the light come on near the power input jack, that tells me that the charger is good and that the jack is also good. I have seen the internal wires fail on these in the past (IRRC). Yes, you will need to open up the laptop to resolve this. Please pay attention to the power input jack location. If the jack is in good shape (I think it is) then check the area for either a set of wires going to another location from the power jack sub-board or for any broken connections or components around the area of the power jack if it is part of the main motherboard. Start there and report what you find. If nothing, we'll look further.

Remove your CMOS battery and your main battery. Unplug all wires from the laptop. Then wait 10 minutes. Doing this will totally reset the computer by draining all circuits of all power.

Now reinstall the CMOS battery and the main battery, then reconnect all wires. Boot the computer, to see if it will power on.

Does this mean I have to take my laptop apart considering that I have to take out the CMOS battery?

I don't know the answer to that question. I have searched both the internet and the HP web site, and I can't find anything about replacing the CMOS battery in your laptop. There are some YouTube videos, but I can't watch them while at my job.

Do these two searches:

* "Replace CMOS battery HP 15-ac108nx"

* "HP 15-ac108nx replace CMOS battery"

(don't include the quotes)

You will find some YouTube videos which may give you an answer to your question.

I understand that some laptops no longer have CMOS batteries. I hope HP hasn't gone that route. Of course, if it is a solid state laptop, maybe there is no need for a CMOS battery.

I have just replaced the CMOS battery of my laptop. It booted up with a BIOS checksum error. However it suddenly shutdown once again and I'm trying to boot it up once again but it isn't

For my G62 HP, I had that same problem and I fixed it by re-inserting the ON button's ribbon connection in it's holding plug, it had inadvertently come out. Look here at minute 3:12 where the pointer is, that's the one. You can't take the keyboard pad off unless you remove the screws inside the battery pack bay. easy job...though I recommend watching the video to figure out which screws hold the keyboard in place. You do not have to take the whole laptop apart for that, although if you suspect the fan might need cleaning you might want to do the whole job.
