Depending on the model, you already have 64-bit, and all you have to do is install 4gb or more ram and install a 64-bit version of the Windows you have.

I need your complete model number to verify, but from my research, the Acer Aspire 3000 comes with an AMD SEMPRON processor. These are not compatible with Intel i5 chips.
mine comes with Sempron 3100+
here's how to identify whether the CPU is 64 bit or 32 bit but you would also need to know whether the IO chipset on the motherboard is 64 bit or 32 bit capable as well.
If the chipset isn't 64 bit capable then it doesn't matter whether the CPU is or not, it won't work at 64 bit
