when I put in thumb drives the system does not register that they are in . Only when I plug in thumb drive in usb port my mouse is plugged do they work.

Update the BIOS, and install latest drivers from the site of your laptop.

What OS is installed in the laptop?
Bit confused by your question.
Are you saying that a mouse works but not a thumbdrive or are you saying that when you plug in a mouse the thumbdrives work in another USB port?

Its usb 3 or classic 2.0? Usb 3.0 need alltime driver....
