Bottom speaker does not work after screen replacement.

Hello,

I've replaced screen in my Pixel 2XL and now bottom speaker is not working at all and top one lowers its volume after playing few seconds. Do you have any idea what happened? I was just gently cleaning the speaker grills with Q-Tips soaked in alkohol. Other people had the same issue. https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/com...

Solução escolhida

I opened my phone again to find a issue. I knocked out two small components when I was disconnecting bottom display connector. Replacing mainboard is probably the only solution. I think iFixit should add caution information to their teardown guide. According to reddit post even trained workers in repair centers made the same mistake. Here is a photo of broken components https://imgur.com/SZ620sF

//EDIT

Soldering upper and lower connector as suggested by other users fixed the problem

Happened with me

The repair guy pricked out the display connected hard & when screen was replace the sound went away, Kaput

Read this thread & shared the link with him. He opened the device to found the 2 blue parts broken, just short them & my pxiel is sounding perfect as before

Man, thanks!!! I had my battery changed by an incompetent moron. He first broke my screen so I had to fight with him to fix the screen HE broke. He ended up ruining my lower speaker and asked me to pay for his mistake. I told him to get lost and decided to fix it myself. The phone was useless anyway. Your post was enlightening! I'm not the welding type so I bought conductive epoxy. Fixed the problem. You're a life saver!

I had the same problem. I still had the components which was lucky and attempted to resolder them to the board. After many frustrating attempts I noticed that these are not transistors. They are small components the looked like inductors and contained only a few coils. I decided to simply short out connection with solder and this solved the problem. I will add that only one (the lower) of the two had become detached on mine.

I can confirm that this method works for my Pixel 2 XL as well.

Thanks Andrew, you saved my pixel2

Worked for me too.

Hello,

I'm from Germany so please excuse my Egnlish ;-) I have had a screen replacemenet and now have the same issue. Do I understad it right that you have to connect upper two inductors and the lower two inductors with solder so that the speaker is working again? If that's correct, I could tell the repair shop to do exactly the same ;-) Thanks Eric

I only knocked off the bottom one so can't say for certain that soldering both will work.

How do you "short out connection with solder"?

It’s definitely caused by one or two resistors/inductors being knocked off during screen replacement, as seen in this picture https://imgur.com/SZ620sF

You have to use a fine soldering tip to form a small glob of solder across the knocked off resistor/inductor pads. It's best to use low heat so that the solder doesn't flow too easily in order to create a bridge across the pads on the circuit board. Care must be taken, because the molten solder glob can easily short out nearby pads, creating an even bigger issue. It's not an easy task especially without using a microscope, so those who don't have the right tools and/or skills, are probably better of taking it to a local phone repair shop and let them bridge the pads for a few bucks. At least now you know exactly what to ask them to do in order to fix your phone. ;)

Did it stop working after you replaced the screen or after you tried cleaning the bottom speaker grill with alcohol?

What kind of alcohol did you use?

Rubbing Alcohol / Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ or etc?

I was cleaning the speakers after taking off broken screen. There was adhesive on the grills. I used 95% ethanol. I assembled the new screen and noticed that the bottom speaker is not working.

Have you inspected that small connector which would plug to the screen?

There may be a chance that one or more small components got knocked or damaged when the ribbon cable was unplugged.

I would assume one or more of those components near there would be used to make the speaker at the bottom work.

That does make me wonder if people have tried replacing the daughter board that connects to the speaker if I'm correct to fix the issue.

Check my answer. You were right, I've knocked some transistors out of the mainboard.
