If you heard gears moving, you need to check if the traverse mechanism is engaged properly / blocked / broke. take some pictures.

I had the same problem; blame flimsy construction. In my case the gear, which was made of the world's cheapest plastic, had partially worn JUST enough to make the thing skip. A friend of mine 3D printed me a new gear and after some careful disassembly, reassembly, and a couple dabs of hot glue, it worked again.
