I've only run into this problem on drives that have been previously formatted MS-DOS FAT. Did the drive come out of a external enclosure? Is it new , used or refurbished? What formate does Disk Utilities say it is?

both came new out of the box from ifixit.
disc description: WDC WD7500BPVT-22HXZT1 Media/Connection Bus:SerialATA2/Connection Typ:Internal/Capacity:5.5TB/Write Status:Read/Write/SMART Status:verified/Partition Scheme:Unformatted
under volume information it says:
mac os extended, but it's not active
Start up from your system installation disk by inserting the disk and holding down the "C" key. Go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities -> Disk Utility. The stats you gave state that the drive is unformatted. Select the upper drive on the left and format it and give it one partition.
i tried it. it says partition failed with error: input/output error
Send it back and get another one.
I would check the connections again. And did you make sure to format the drive first?

connections are fine. when i try to format it, it shows the harddrive, but does not do anything, when i try to format it. but states, that it is unformated and capacity is 5.5TB!!!
I ran into a similar problem with an 1,8" drive in a MacBook Air - it turned out to be a faulty drive.
