Sd Card Slot Bad

I am pretty sure the SD card slot on the 2ds is bad. I've put different SD cards into it. It always says that the card is write protected. I know that its not.

Is there a way I can fix it? I read somewhere that maybe the arm inside the SD card slot for write protection is broke but I can't find anything on how to fix it or how to replace the whole sd card slot if I buy a new one to replace it. Thanks.

The fix for this problem is simple. Do you know what SD stands for? Secure Digital. The little yellow or gray slider on the side of you memory card enables or disables the write protection, thus, you get your error. When you put the card in, it slides it down and stops the card from writing. To fix this, take a little peice of tape and cover the slider while in the up (unlocked) position. This will prevent it from sliding to the locked position. Be careful not to cover any of the copper pins on the SD card with tape!

But if the issue is not the actual card itself this will not help. Sometime little hand will stick the card in backwards thus causing the write protect switch to be positioned into the improper position.

por

@luccrook, what do mean? There's only on way the card can go in.

por

There is only one way the card is "Supposed" to go it. In fact it will go in many different ways. Not necessarily the correct way which will result in damaging the slot. Trust me, I have seen SD cards inserted backwards and upside down many of times. Doing so will damage the slot.

thanks the most you wont know how much i play this at night xD

no matter what i do, write protection is still enabled :(

I too had this same issue after my son had jammed his SD card into the slot backwards. When this happens it bends the switch for the SD card write protect in the slot. Its not the card that is the issue but the slot itself. If you look into the sd slot you will see this switch. It looks like a tiny half paper clip shape. It is on the right side of the slot when the 2DS is laying on its back. All I did to fix it was reach in with a very fine 1mm flat head screwdriver and bend the switch up a little bit. The switch was bent down so the card was always reading as write protected. After I bent it up, the switch would fit into the proper gap on the card when the switch was not in write protect mode and therefore the 2DS would see the card as not being write protected. This fixed the issue on my 2DS.

Great advice! This same thing happened to my 8yo son on day two of owning a 2DS. I followed your instructions and now he's up and running. I also put tape over SD card slot and told him not mess with the card without my help.

por

Thank you!! This fixed my son's 3DS. I tried several different SD cards and SD adapters; I even took it apart and cleaned the SD contacts... I wish I would have found this sooner. But thanks again!!!

You are my hero and my son's! Thank you so much. My boy has been really poorly and a broken DS was the final straw. You've made a 6yr old and his mum v happy today!

My 5yo pushed in a SD upside down and it bent the WP pin beyond repair.

Nintendo uses Mitsumi CIM-J44N slots. these slots have normally open type contacts for CD en WP.

http://www.mitsumi.co.jp/latest/Catalog/...

so if no card is insterted, or write-protected, the contact is open.

Since the pin was heavely bent (in my case), there was no repair possible to the pin.

I pulled out the pin, and buzzed out the motherboard.

The WP (write protect) and CD (Card detect) lines have jumper pads on them.

So i just put a solder blob on the WP line jumper, and now it always reports as not write-protected. (who needs WP anyway?)

Quick and easy fix.

@steho Do you have any experience in repairing the old 3dsxl Sd card slot.? i have 3 units that cannot read SD cards even after replacing the sd card slot which is soldered direclty on the motherboard. Do you have any idea, Test points maybe or resistors that needs to be replaced?

Thanks steve

Sorry, cant help you with that. Don't have much experiance with DS hardware, and I dont have a 3DS XL to compare or take readings.

I got a 2ds with this same problem, I found this post to try to solve it, when I disassembled the 2ds I found that this had already done the fix you did, I don't know if the previous owner did it wrong because it doesn't work, maybe the points are damaged, I re-welded that spot but it still doesn't work, I don't know if there will be any problem if I do a solder between the pins instead of that point that you specify

https://imgur.com/a/647iXJt

the contacts seems to point to the same spot, what do you say?

por

@santiagovalencia109 it reports the SD card as write protected? Can you confirm the card is actually readable? No other damage to the pins? Maybe one of the data lines is bad (check pullup resistors)..

I am having the same exact issue with my sons 2DS, but the motherboard in this unit does not look like the pictures above. Im afraid to put a solder somewhere that may just bork the board. The board in this unit actually has arrows and boxes pointing to text, Im guessing marking what each jumper does?

Where you circled on your board, it does not look the same, but the text where the box points to is labeled C155 DA4. Would it still be the same place to put the solder to disable the write protection?

The WP pin of my sister's 2ds broke and i don't know how to fix it since the motherboard does not look the same as the picture above. I'm kinda stuck with that. Appreciate any type of help!

It will not look the same. The picture is of a standard SD slot. Nintendo uses their own proprietary design but the functionality is the same. Unfortunately if the WP tang is broken off it is not worth the effort to try and solder it back on. At that point I would just recommend replacement by the main board it is attached to.

por

@luccrook But are they no other way to compensate the loss of the pin? By solder something on the motherboard or something like that?

por

So how do we fix it. I accidentally put my sd card backwards in my 2ds.
