Can my RAM be upgraded?

Block Image

When I opened my asus q504u I did not see any ram slots? Is it built in to the motherboard? Several websites said that the ram is upgradeable.

Hi,

How much RAM do you have installed?

According to the specifications for a Q504UA it is 12 GB DDR4 2133MHz SDRAM, up to 16 GB SDRAM.

This link from Crucial memory seems to indicate that 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB SODIMM modules are compatible with your laptop and that there are two (2) slots. Although you cannot exceed 16GB maximum.

You said that you had the laptop open. Did you check the motherboard under the keyboard to see if the RAM slots are there?

Update (12/11/2016)

Hi,

The following is all speculation on my part.

Looking at your picture, the only thing I think that I can see which may be RAM are the 4 ICs in a vertical row between the CPU and the fan.

If you Google the number that is printed on the IC it may be that they are a 'memory 'type IC (Nand flash perhaps since they all look the same). Hopefully if they are, then the number may also indicate the capacity. I cannot enlarge it enough to read what is written on them

Since there are 4 it could be that they are 4GB each and perhaps one of them is not being accessed by the BIOS if you have only 12GB working

I have searched online for pictures of identical replacement motherboards and they all show the same as yours. What you see as the green pcb is the entire motherboard so there is nothing extra under the 'black' which I think is the battery. There is also nothing under the HDD as there is no suitable external connection for RAM on the motherboard.

If the IC numbers indicate that they are not a 'memory' type of IC then there is the possibility that there are RAM slots on the underside of the motherboard. I could not find any reverse (underside) pictures of the motherboard to see what is there, so you would have to totally disconnect the motherboard and remove it to see what is underneath.

I have the stock ram that came with it. I wish I could post a pic of it with the cover off. There is huge section that seems to be in a black cover. Not sure if that is where it's at. Or maybe under the hdd.

Thank you. I just added an image. Not sure where my RAM is. Maybe the image will give a better view of my problem.

Did you ever find out? I'm sure you did, but for others, it's under the silvery rectangle on the right side. Pry it up gently the side tabs with forceps/ tiny needle nose pliers.

por

Yes I did. It was under the silver plated. There was only one slot to use so I replaced the 4G with an 8 G and now I am running 16G. Not too shabby, plus upgrading to an SSD my laptop is flying as compared to before.
