Why is my computer getting so hot?
After an hour or so my computer gets really hot and then turns off.

All laptops shut down when they overheat. This is done to avoid permanent damage, etc, etc.
To prevent it from further overheats in the future, I'd recommend using a can of compressed air to blow out each of the vents that your computer uses as cooling. If you want to, you can actually disassemble the entire laptop and do a thorough cleaning of the likely very dirty fan.
On the software side of things, check your Task Manager when the computer is on. Take note of any processes that use excessive amounts of CPU time or consume large amounts of RAM. You may be able to uninstall the programs that do that.

If there is dust, do try to clean it after referring a good tear-down/disassembly guide.
If there is still extreme heat (this may even be caused due to gaming for a longtime on a laptop with games that need powerful specs but your laptop may just have the minimum requirements - I have had this issue too), either try to buy a cooling pad (which doesn't cost too much and works well for me) OR Build a Cooling Pad (there is a YouTube video out there explaining how you can make one with an egg tray!)

If your laptop is constantly running, dust can accumulate and cause your laptop to overheat and lock up. Place a piece of cloth or towel to lay the laptop down on, or some place where you won't mind dust spreading. Make sure that the laptop is completely shut off. Just need to simply remove the back cover of the laptop. Locate the fan and use a can of compressed air on the fan to get all the dust and debris off of it. Be sure to not spray to strong with the can as this can damage the fan. Hope this helps.
