How can I check the cause of backlash in the rear axle?

1800 E Sports Coupe

There is a transmission "snatch" (jerking) when driving slowly, usually in the higher gear ratios, accompanied by a knock when decelarating. It normally happens during gear changing, but disappears when driving normally in top gear

I have checked the driveline and all propshaft bolts are tight and there is no "play" in any of the universal joints. Transmission rubber mountings are sound.

With the wheels on the ground, I can detect about 1/4 inch of free-play when I turn the propshaft in either direction. I know that some movement is normal. but I don't know how much constitutes wear in the rear axle.

Has anyone experienced this with their Volvo 1800 E or ES models?

Derek that could be caused by excessive backlash as well as other things. You may have to dig deeper into your rear differential.

Of course only if you ruled out anything else, like faulty u-joints in the propeller shaft etc. take a look in this part of the manual Volvo P1800 Rear End
