It sounds like you're having problems with compression. What was the original problem with the cam shaft sensor? No start?
The fact you're getting heat problems on the exhaust leads me to believe that you've advanced the timing much too far. Probably running very rich on the timing which explains the easier start and hot exhaust. You may also be experiencing a misfire. Is the motor running really rough when you do get started up?

Do you smell rotten eggs? if you do, it means your catilitic convertor is bad, This will cause exhaust to get hot. Good luck.
