Your problem is that the drive isn't in the correct format. Under the advanced options tab in the disk utility, select APM (apple partition map) and format it with that. If your drive is formatted in FAT, FAT32, NTFS, XFS,or GUID, mac OS X won't install. When you sellect "Mac OS Extended..." The utility doesn't automaticly change the system to APM (Apple Partition Map For PowerPC Based Macs[PowerPC 601 - G5]) or The GUID Partition Table (For x86 [Intel] Macs). Most new drives ship with NTFS, and FAT Filesystems for Windows, and x86 Linux, Mac OS X can reconize and mount NTFS Filesystems if that have "Mac OS Extended..." but cannot boot off of them.

where do i find the advanced options tab?

por

When disk utility is open, select the drive that you want to format, then under the "Partition" Tab, click "options" this will be located near the bottom of the window, then, a window should open that will give you 3 choices, "GUID Partition Table, Apple Partition Map, and Master Boot Record", your drive is probably set to master boot record, set it to Apple Partition Map since you have a PowerPC Mac (G5) and it should format and the OS should be installable.

in the partition tab, its says no options available.

i bought a new hard drive, and installed following the replacing hard drive steps. i then followed the link to get to the OS X install guide. i inserted my mac OS X install disc and followed the steps, but the destination comes up as red not green. not sure what i did wrong.

are you sure that you were trying to partition the drive, and not a volume, volumes are indented, and physical drives aren't, you have an iMac G5, so the disk doesn't need a jumper since it's SATA, but the SATA controller might be bad, try to disconnect, and reconnect the SATA cables to the drive.

Hi, Bring up disk utility on the OS disk and format the drive for Mac and try again. It should allow you to install at that point. Ralph

followed the steps for fresh install of OS X that were given with the replacing hard drive steps. i clicked the erase tab, left volume format on MAC OS EXtended (journaled) and hit erase. when it was done i closed disk utility and when i got to the destination section, the hard drive icon was red instead of green.

Chris Green is correct.

I answered a similar question here: will not recognize newly formatted hd

Basically, follow the instructions in this article:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1600

making sure to repartition the disk after reformatting (otherwise the problem won't be solved). But instead of choosing GUID Partition Scheme as the article instructs, choose Apple Partition Scheme. (The GUID Partition Scheme is necessary for Intel-based Macs, but PowerPC-based Macs will only install Mac OS X on disks with the Apple Partition Scheme).

And don't forget to reboot after repartitioning. That'll clear up the red stop sign marked drive.
