dull screen display problems, backlight?...faulty screen?

Hello Everyone.

I have recently purchased a Iphone 8GB 3G.

The screen seems to have developed a fault.

When switched on, its very dark, faint and can hardly see any of the icons. Although i have tried utube, sound works fine also the vibrate function works fine.

Followed few of the hints on web forums of changing the brighness settings etc bt to no avail

I have looked at few forums and cannot seem to fathom the cause or the solution.

can someone help me.

I am trekking in approx 3 weeks for 2 months and could do with this working.

@clark

Can you please tell us what you did with your 3G? The instruction I posted posted was for 3GS only!

For 3G there is no real solution...

For 3GS I found two possible fixes for that problem!

1. "I fixed my backlight issue on iphone 3GS" (Jason Simmons replied 4 months ago) - http://getsatisfaction.com/apple/topics/...

I did the same thing. Got mine wet in the lake and got back and backlight did not work. Took it apart and got what water was left out. Put it back together. Phone worked but no backlight. So I decided to take it apart again as a last ditch effort a couple of days later. Wallah!!! I fixed it.

Here is how I got my backlight back to working.

You have to take about your iphone. There are instructions on the web to do this. Disconnect plugs 1 and 2 and ribbon 3. I had to remove number 5 cover cafefully. It will pop off. See the image. Just above the pointed out area of the coil, there is a small area of circuity. Mine had just a little bit of corrosion. Had to look hard to see it. I took a toothbrush with some contact cleaner and degreaser. Cleaned all the corrosion off. Put the cover #5 back on and both plugs and ribbon. Put the 2 screws back in the bottom. Pressed the button and top and low and behold, my backlight was on.

Hope this helps you guys

Did some research.

Looks like a reasonable replacement for the coil (Solution1) is Digikey part 445-3226-1-ND which is TDK part VLF3012AT-6R8MR59, which is a 6.8uH inductor with 600-800mA max current for general dc-dc converter apps including LCD displays.

This worked for me after trying so many other things including replacing the backlight. I used a toothbrush with alcohol on the coil in the photograph posted above. Everything is working perfect now. Thank you so much.

sounds like the backlight. you can try checking connector 1 for LCD-check for good connection, pins not bent, dust etc. other options get more difficult or more expensive. you need to isolate where the problem lies... connector 1, backlight component or connection between the 2. then go from there

So by simply not turning off your iPhone before taking it apart can fry your LCD/backlight? I think this is what I did when trying to replace my LCD/Digitizer :(
