@dougtractor you are using the proper sparkplug? Make sure that the ones you are suing are not to long. If you are, then it is possible that you either have a bad starter that will not provide enough torque to turn the engine over during the compression stroke or you could have a timing error that will cause your cylinders to flood. What does the plug look like when you remove it? Is it wet? You checked your battery to make sure it has enough power to turn the engine over? what model is your Murray? what engine does it have?

@dougtractor, could be a bad starter which will not have enough power to turn the engine over once it is under compression. Depending on your engine, this could also be caused by valves that are out of adjustment. That would cause a compression release to not work and the starter does not have enough power to turn the engine over. A faulty camshaft can also be a cause, so this will all depend on what engine you have

I had the same issue on my dad’s lawnmower Troy bilt 20 hp Briggs and Stratton. It ran for him but I went to use it it dead headed. I as well thought bad starter or bad battery. I did my research intake valve was out 1/8” exhaust valve out 3/8 of an inch I looked at spec adjustments called for .003 in. On intake and .005” on exhaust, no bent rods how he got lucky on this is beyond me.
