Is there a way to unlock my iphone 6plus and stay with my carrier but when I travel I can use another company? Or is this the only way?

Yes! If your phone is not locked to the carrier you can get a second SIM with a pay as you go plan in the other country you are going to. I carry three different SiM's when I travel to Europe. But, the first step is to get the carrier to unlock your phone if it's locked.

You may need to pay off the outstanding value of the phone before they will release it. Then when you get back you can swap the SIM back to your home carrier with your original number.

Be sure not to loose the original Sim.

Carriers will happily replace a broken or lost SIM, in the stores even. Some do it for free. It's a five minute job.

Phones sold by carriers directly are generally "SIM-locked" to that carrier's network. But you can have it unlocked, subject to terms of your carrier contract. Contact the carrier customer service, or go into a local store, to see if you're entitled to unlock it (usually depends upon how many months you've been under contract, or if the contract minimum term has been completed).

If you paid full price for the iPhone from the carrier, it may already be SIM-unlocked. You can find out by plugging it into your computer and running iTunes with a new carrier's SIM card installed. iTunes will take through the process of activating it with the new SIM card.

Yes, this is one of the most common reasons to unlock a phone while still under contract. Though the carrier might like to charge you roaming charges while abroad, it's common for a customer to want to buy a prepaid SIM while traveling. Some carriers (e.g. T-Mobile a few years ago) would let you unlock your phone after 90 days under contract.

Contact your carrier customer service department.

iPhone is locked to the carrier by certain components on the logic board. You must replace the logic board with one of the new carrier you wish to use (T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon). If you carrier is not listed, find which carrier the carrier you want to switch over to piggybacks off of (for example, Ting operates off of the T-Mobile network).
