Roku freezes, connector problem between TV and device

Every day or two, after I haven't been using it for several hours, my Roku 2 XS freezes and needs to be rebooted. When I unplug it and plug it in again, I have to fiddle with the connector before it reboots. This is not the power cord connector, but the connector from the TV to the Roku, on the Roku end. Even so, I still need to power cycle, so maybe there are two things going on.

Since I have an older TV, and the Roku 2 XS has a USB port that I use every day, I can't replace the unit with the same model. My only option, other than buying a new HDMI TV, is to repair the Roku.

The solution is a surge suppressor. My Roku 3 kept pausing during streaming Netflix. I thought it was a network issue but it did the same thing when I used a USB stick and the media player app. I noticed that the pauses occurred when there was a little noise (snow) on a dark background TV image. I realized it was electrical noise in the AC power. Shutting off the AC unit stopped the pauses. I bought a good quality surge suppressor, and the pauses stopped, and the TV picture no longer has noise.

The cheap little 12 volt AC adapter that powers the Roku unit wont filter any power surges or power noise. You need a good quality surge suppressor.

I found out that the Roku 2 XS has been having freeze problems since an OS update early December. http://forums.roku.com/viewtopic.php?f=2... Maybe Roku support will fix it. One can only hope.

I get a Roku hang one or more times during the viewing of the movie. It appears.just before going to the commercial break. Clicking fast forward and then click play usually wakes Roku up and continues viewing.

I was having a similar issue on my Roku 2XS ever since the update back in December. Try going to Settings>Privacy and make sure there's a check mark next to "limit ad tracking". This worked pretty well for me. I'm guessing that someone didn't do enough QA testing on their ad code or the management didn't care and just cranked the dial up too much on the ad software.

@Clearest WOW! Your "limit ad tracking" fix has eliminated my Roku XS box's lock ups! Since the end of 2015 my Roku XS had been freezing with a frequency of approximately once a day. My workaround was simply to power off the device and power it back on. What can I say, thank you ! For the record, my unit is running v7.0 build 9044 firmware.

por

Perfect. Didn't even know that ad setting was there. Sneaky.

por

So far so good, thanks for the tip!

por

No freezes now, thank you!

por

That explains why only apps that show ads (Hulu; CBS All Access; etc.) were freezing. Thank you for the fix!

Hi,

Here is a link which describes how to either do a "soft" reset or a "hard" reset on your Roku.

A soft reset will just reset the device from its present state and return it to normal. With a hard reset it restores the device back to a factory default condition and you will have to set it up again as you did when you first got it. To access the reset button insert the end of a paperclip into the hole marked "reset". To not push in too hard, you will feel it when the button is pushed.

You might also like to check that your Roku has the latest updates installed.

Although a Roku device is a great item, sometimes it can crash, freeze or restart without warning. It can freeze, reboot, or freeze during streaming, browsing channels, or while it is idle. This tutorial will show you how to fix roku freeze and restart problems.

Before we get into the details and find solutions for Roku freezing or rebooting problems, it's important to remember one thing. Roku channels are not channels. Instead, they are apps that may or might not have channels. A channel-equipped app could offer live TV, such as Sling and Pluto TV. Although Nick and CBS News are not channels, they are apps that provide live streaming or on-demand content that could be called channels. Okay, let's move on. These are some tips that will stop your Roku from freezing or rebooting.

What causes a Roku device to freeze or restart?

There are many reasons your Roku device can malfunction. It's best not to go too complicated and start with the easiest solution.

Allow the Roku Device to cool down by unplugging it

Too much heat can lead to strange behavior in devices. Roku devices, like most modern devices, are small by design and don't have internal fans. This means that there is less chance of failure. They rely instead on heat transference and circulation. That's why some parts are oriented in a particular way and have heatsinks.

  1. Allow your Roku device to sit unplugged for between 2 and 5 minutes.
  2. You must ensure that your device is free from obstructions that hinder heat dissipation. Check to ensure your device is not too close to any TVs, computers, or walls.
  3. Reconnect your device and allow it to restart.

Updating Your Roku

This step may have been tried before, but it might be worth a second attempt. Updates to the Roku are made frequently to fix bugs or add new features. A system update, like the Nintendo Switch Pokemon and headphone issues, can solve these problems as well as add new fixes.

  1. Select Home if it is not already.
  2. Scroll down to select Settings.
  3. Next, choose System on the new page.
  4. Select System Update, then select Check Here.
  5. Roku will update if one is available.

Reboot Your Roku

The majority of Roku users leave it plugged in and in standby mode, even when they are not using it. It is important to restart the Roku regularly. This procedure will refresh all files and reset the memory. It may also stop problems like freezing or restarting.

  1. Navigate to the Settings Menu and select system.
  2. Select System to restart.
  3. Next, choose Restart.

You may find that the rebooting steps are enough to resolve your issues. It is a good idea every now and again to reboot your device.

Take the headphones out of the remote

It is known that headphones can cause problems when connected to the remote. Although a fix was found, some users complain that Roku freezes or reboots when headphones are connected to it.

  1. Your Roku should be updated
  2. For at least 30 seconds, unplug the Roku.
  3. Take the headphones out of the remote.
  4. Take out the batteries from your remote. Wait for about 30 seconds before you insert them again.
  5. Reboot the Roku
  6. Keep checking back for new updates.

Switch Wi-Fi to Disable

Nintendo Switch has been known to interfere with certain Roku Devices. However, this is only for Pokemon Sword or Shield.

  1. Your Roku should be updated
  2. Unplug your Roku.
  3. You can either turn off the Nintendo Switch, or change it to Airplane mode.
  4. Reboot the Roku
  5. Keep checking back for new updates.

A Roku update could have solved the Pokemon problems. Many people reported experiencing freezing and rebooting issues. This could be due to another problem or because the update wasn't completed. Roku tech support recommended that Roku users try to update their device later in the evening. This is because the problem could be caused by a "nearby Nintendo Switch."

Try these troubleshooting tips after you have tried the first two.

Make sure to check for changes

Are you making any configuration or adding new apps (a.k.a. Have you made any configuration changes or added new apps (a.k.a. channels) since the Roku started freezing and rebooting? Although rare, it is possible for Roku to freeze or reboot due to the addition of apps.

Take into account any changes that you made to Roku after it began having problems. You can go back and make the necessary changes, then undo them to see what happens.

Channel problems?

Is your Roku unable to access a particular app or channel in the app, or does it freeze? Do you do the same thing every time it happens? It may be channel- or app-related. If so, you can remove the app and reinstall it. To reduce memory footprint, you can remove channels that you don't watch or change the menu.

Check Your Network

Although it is unlikely, it could happen that your Roku device freezes or reboots due to poor network signals. Check the signal strength of your Wi-Fi device if you are using it. Make sure there's enough bandwidth for everyone in your household, especially if they are also using the network. Retest your signal quality and signal strength if it is low. It could be the wireless signal. If it is stable, it may be the wireless signal. Try changing your Wi-Fi channel. Faulty Wi Fi signals can cause data to be lost on your Roku device and can result in a reboot or freeze.

Check out the HDMI Cable

The majority of Roku devices connect to your TV using HDMI cables. Try it out with another cable to see what happens. There are differences between HDMI cables just like there are physical and connective differences between ethernet cables and USB cables. Although HDMI cables are rarely faulty, this is a worthwhile step that takes only a few seconds.

Factory Reset Your Roku

Resetting Roku is an option that you should only take as a last resort. All your settings, customizations, and any modifications you made to your Roku will be lost. If all other steps fail, you have no other option than to replace the device. There is no way to know if your Roku device is defective.

  1. Choose Home from your Roku remote.
  2. Scroll down and choose Settings.
  3. Then, select System.
  4. Next, select Advanced System Setting.
  5. Select Factory Reset.
  6. Next, enter the code, then select OK and confirm your selection if asked.
  7. Wait for Roku's configuration settings to be wiped, then download new files and then reboot.

If a factory reset fails, there is no way to fix it - unless you do a "magical" upgrade!

Didn't work for me either and I'm having your same problem. Not very happy right now. Will check back if I get a fix!

Yeah, I think there is still a problem the way CBS all access plays/freezes on the Roku 2. NBC News app freezes up every few minutes. I'll try a surge suppressor, a settings limit for ad tracking, then I guess a hard reset. (Then toss it out the window?) Tweet

Roku to be sure they know theres a problem. Thx
