Sometimes the display will break up when the cover is moved back and forth. At times it just flickers, other times one of the three colors (?) seems to disappear. This has been going on a long time, although lately it seems more frequent.

The LVDS cable, which supplies video signal from the graphics chip on the logic board to the LCD panel is you most likely culprit.
This cable runs thru the right hinge of the device - if you work the right side hinge you should notice the issue is easier to reproduce over moving the entire display.
The cable itself can be replaced, but does require disassembly of the display panel itself in order to get to it.
