Why is this metal spot left uninsulated? Is there a connection to the logic board through that?

As it turns out Apple needed the space for a part that was just a bit higher on the backside of the board. You can see the two parts in this image: Logic board Backside. It's the two tan colored parts in the upper right. I also suspect they run a bit warm so the shell is likewise used as a heatsink as well.
