Why can't I use my headphone jack as a line out?

When I plug headphones into my Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 they work normally, but when I try to use the headphone jack as a line out, the internal speakers remain on and nothing goes through the external amp it's plugged into. It seems the Galaxy does not recognize the stereo 3.5mm cable as a need to send the signal out the headphone jack. Any ideas?

Roger, check the male end of the jack. Make sure that it has the same assigned contacts as your headphones. your tip and ring assignments most likely are different. Are you using a 2 ring or 1 ring connector?
