U601 RF Replacement iPhone 5 Baseband Chip IC U16X

Hi,

I have a problem with an iPhone 5 it was dropped and has had a new front panel but the phone is now not activating, the phone has been restored and now gets Error 16 about 80% through. After some research I found its probably the U601_RF. I have purchased this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291322189388?_... as an attempted fix but I need some advice on removing the original chip.

I have removed the EMI Shield from the mainboard using a heat-tool with a 4mm tip @ 250 degrees, but this doesn't seem to be enough for the chip as its not budging. I have cranked the temperature up a bit to 300 but still not moving. I dont want to go above this temp for obvious reasons. Can anyone offer any advice on removing the chip without damaging the mainboard? I think there may be some resin surrounding the chip but its pretty hard to see, maybe this needs cleaning/removing first?

Thanks

Have the same problem. Also bought that chip in ebay and don't know how to replace it. Please give me update once you already fixed yours. Thanks.

you have to use a hotair Station. the Temperatur is min 345 - 350 °C to desolder an ic in the iphones. The solder is lead free!

Common temp to remove the IC is around 320C-340C. Shield the other components properly and use flux. If you have never done it, I suggest you seek out somebody with BGA reflow and reball experience

It's very simple to remove the chip. First you need to shield other competes around the chip by BGA heat protecting tape to prevent from damaging. Then simply reflow het 250 - 320c on the chip and remove the chip with sharp knife. After that clean the pad with solder wik. Now it's ready to solder the new one but here is the issue before you solder this, chip you must program it because this chip is Baseband CPU memory chip. The serial number of the phone is saved in this chip, so you need to read the serial number from the phone and then you have to transfer the serial number data to new chip.

Was the ic damaged? if not it probably wasn't your issue. You should always have someone experienced look over the restore logs prior to doing board work just in case. The GUI errors are basically useless.

Im not sure if they can be reprogrammed this way on an iPhone 5, but on the 5S you have to force DFU mode (and i mean force! instructions here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASXZHaJo...) and restore the device from a mac. The ic gets reprogrammed during the nand repartitioning (on a 5s or newer, again, im not sure about the 5) using the information from the CPU and Baseband CPU.

Worth mentioning too, if you havent done BGA rework before, this is one of the worst IC's you can start with

You cannot replace this IC because it is paired to the baseband
