Possible to replace trackpad by detaching trackpad cable?

This guide suggests removing the logic board to replace the trackpad including the trackpad cable.

Is it possible, instead, to detach the cable from the existing trackpad and attach it to the new one? This would eliminate the need to remove the logic board.

Removing the logic board to replace the screws is absolutely asinine and a COMPLETE waste of time. This is only necessary with 2008 models where they put the screws in the dumbest of places. The only reason to replace the cable is you ripped it or it was damaged by liquid. 99% of the time trackpad replacements occur because it is not tracking or not clicking, and these faults lie with the trackpad - not the cable. So, most of the time, you can replace just the trackpad, meaning no removal of the logic board is necessary.

1) Remove the bottom cover.

2) Remove the screws holding the battery in. They will be either tri wing, or that five pin star knockoff torx BS. Buy both screwdrivers, they're cheap.

3) Take the trackpad cable out CAREFULLY! TS0P sensor is inside this cable, &&^& it up and your laptop will run slow with fans revving high all the time.

4) Remove the four tiny black screws holding the trackpad in with a phillips screwdriver. #000 wiha picofinish is your friend here. These screws are totally viewable, and within reach, with the motherboard screwed inside the computer.

Trackpad will come out.

Follow in reverse and all is fixed. If you remove the logic board to remove the trackpad, I will flog you, and it will hurt almost as much as the wasted 20 minutes of your time. ;)

Look at you Louis, not even one F word. I love this!

Yup, but I could hear the whip crackling.. (is that correct?)

Louis Rossmann, thanks. In step 3, you say "take the trackpad cable out carefully." Do you mean disconnect the trackpad cable from the trackpad?

por

Yes. Don't rip it when removing it from the trackpad, it's stuck in there pretty hard.

Yay... :) This should really get more attention. It took me a while to find it. Another trackpad repair done, though with lots of hair pulling and f words. Those little screws are batards when they won't come undone.

How do you propose to access the screws with the logic board in the way?

The four silver screws referred to in step 27? Those are not blocked by the logic board (only the battery).

The new trackpad comes with a cable attached. To remove replace the unit the new cable will have to go under the logic board. If you think you have a shortcut go for it, take lots of notes and photographs and you can post a guide.

machead3, thanks for the reply. You say that "the new trackpad comes with a cable attached." My question is, can this cable be detached from the trackpad? And then, can the existing cable, one end of which is already plugged in to the logic board, be attached? Or is the cable fixed to the trackpad and not detachable?
