Cracked screen, but under the glass

I've been asked if I can fix a Kindle Fire HD (model #3HT7G) where the glass itself is fine, but there is a crack is under the surface on the next layer down.

Do I need to replace the whole front of the unit, or can I just replace the broken part? And any ideas on where I can pick up the replacement part?
