Power Button very dodgy.

Hi.

So my old Mac (early 2008) started behaving very strange 6 months ago. When I try to boot my mac I have to press the power button 15-20 times, and if nothing happens I wait for 15 minutes and try again... and so on until it boots.

When the mac finally is on the power button works perfectly, and it registrates every single time I press it. If I restart the computer it also boots perfectly every time.

But if I shut it down I have to start over again with the dodgy power button. The same thing happens when I close the lid, then it wont wake up again and then I have to do a forced shutdown (Holding down the power button until it is completely turned of)

I've formatted the hdd and reinstalled the OS (Lion), SMC-reset, PRAM- NVRAM-reset and nothing seems to do the trick.

I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware failure, because when it's on, the button works like a charm (as descriped abowe)

Please tell me you know a little trick for this

Sounds to me like a moisture/humidity problem - when it's hot there's good contact, but when cold the buttons contacts wont touch. You could try to carefully clean and dry the power button (some spray dielectric contact cleaner might help). If not you could try to replace just the button (advanced DIY) or replace the top case with a new button included.

It actually sound very plausible because if the mac has been running and I shut it down, then normally I can boot it with the power button again within 3-5 minutes. But if it has been of for the night, then it takes somewhere between 1-8 hours.

But as I said, I will try this one of the next days and return.

This is definitely something I would try to do.
